Its got 2 THICK coats of primer. Just rustolium iron oxide stuff. Its cheap and works fine. didn't take pics because i was irritated by the paint in my eyes. I use a pressure pot so I can paint upside down. Laying on my back painting the underside of the frame because I am too lazy to take it off the springs will do that. I will paint it with rustolium semi gloss black when i get a chance.
Heres a blurry pic inside my plastic jeep palace

Thanks guys. It means a lot. I am not totally happy about the engine mounts, although I know they will work fine. I may redesign them. The overspray on the axles is actually there because I welded on some tabs for brake lines and the spring perches on the D30 were bare. I am sure I will need to cut something off/weld something on and who knows what. The great thing about this iron oxide primer is that it takes quite a lot to get the substrate to rust, unlike regular grey primer. I was already getting plenty of surface rust that I needed to get ahead of.

That looks dandy, sitting there in bare metal, Chris. Well done.

I used the Rustoleum Red Oxide primer when I built my JEEP. I brushed it on. Then brushed on the same brand of semi-gloss black. I've been very happy with it's longevity thus far. I am not sure the modern products from Rustoleum are of the same quality. They don't call red oxide anymore. And it doesn't smell as nasty as it used to, IMO. Mine also sat and cured for a looong time before it rolled out of the garage.

Thanks again guys. The Rustolium primer is actually called rusty metal primer. This particular gallon I purchased at a hardware store thats going out of business up the street. It was 50 bucks, but 80% off. Since it was so expensive it sat on the shelf for at least 15 years. This gallon uses acetone to thin, not mineral spirits. drys in a very short time. It actually clogs up the air holes in the gun cup as you're shooting it. For heavy steel this primer has always worked fine for me. Its not a car paint though, for that an epoxy sealer and 2K primer is the way to go. I primed my first cj5 with this stuff over 20 years ago and drove it in primer in winter around New Jersey. No rust. I then had it painted the "resale red of jeeps". Yes, i was that guy too.

After I primed the frame it became apparent that the rear stand offs for the shackle mounts were slightly crooked, so I cut them off. I also didn't weld the DOM tube to the fabricated ruff stuff part. Its raining, so I TIG welded it inside.

This side of this particular one looks good enough to post. Its far from great, but will do . It will never come apart. If you don't put your time in practicing, you will never get better at anything. Tell you what though, I am expert with a cut off wheel.:)

I'd be proud of that weld.

I like to tell people that I'm not much of a welder but, I'm one helluva grinder. hahaha

:) That funny right there. I'll have to use that on the head mechanic at work. Only, with him, it's for real.

Primed. Won't rust now. As far as primer goes, it looks good. Gotta order 5/16 fuel line tube for fuel and return and a roll of Nicopp 3/16 brake line to plumb this thing up. The Nicopp is so much easier to flare than the regular steel.

Are you planning on squirting it with some black or something before you intall the hard lines? Right now it's clean and ready.

Yes, its going to either get rustoleum semi gloss or gloss black. The primer is real thick and its actually slightly soft still. I want to mock it all up, then squirt some paint on it. I will scuff it with scotchbrite and it will be ok. I want to make sure the steel fuel lines get paint too, but I want to bend them first. I also need to wire wheel the tank skid plate and drill and tap holes for that to hang off the rear bumper/crossmember/body mount. This is of course much more work than I had wanted to dive into. Whatever, put my head down and get to work!
