I'm trying to find an engine for my 55 cj5. I currently have a t14 transmission that had a Buick 198 in front of it. Does anybody know what engines will adapt to this tranny. Would like to stay with a 4 cyl of v6. Also have the stock 4 cyl available to me but not sure about the adaptation to the t14 thanks andrew

Buick V-6 would be the easiest as you have the motor mounts, exhaust, etc. already in place. You will need a different bellhousing and possibly adapter, flywheel, etc.

Just about any GM engine will bolt up to the adapter.

Are you set on keeping the T14? Maybe you can find someone who will trade a T90 for it? Then you could use the F head that's available.

Like Tim said, if it was set up with the 198, most GM bellhousings will bolt to the existing adapter. And as Nick posted, another Buick V6 will be a near bolt-in. Whether or not you want to go back to the F head depends on several factors, but if the Jeep currently has the 198, it's going to be all the same work as another engine swap and will need new motor mounts, complete F head bellhousing/clutch, and a T90/T98 transmission. I'm not aware of any T86/T14 adpters to use the F head.

If you actually want to use the Jeep for a Jeep, personally I would stick with the V6. IMO, the V6 makes an almost completely different vehicle compared to the stock 4 cylinder version. Not only a lot more fun to drive, but more economical too.

I agree- another GM-ish V6 will be your fastest/easiest/cheapest route to getting on the road (& off :))

Place a wanted ad here in the classifieds, try one on the willys tech parts board as well.

Also, fill in your location information in your profile- if we know where you're at we may be able to suggest some places that would have an engine for you.

Just a heads-up, but I think the Buick 198 uses the "2 ear" style block, also common to the 215 alloy V8, so the existing bellhousing won't work with the regular 225 and later V6 pattern. This might limit the engine selection, depending on how the T14 was coupled to the 198.
By the way, the 1990's V8 Land Rovers use the "2 ear" bellhousing pattern.

The bell and if I remember the motor mounts are different between the two. I swapped a 225 in where a 198 was years ago, but changed the tranny too so I didn't have to worry about the match.

The T14 should still have standard bolt pattern for that model and just takes the adapter or the bell with adapter to fit to a 231 or 225 if memory serves.

Let's start by saying it's been over 40 years since I put the 198 in the MB. Both of the motors use the T90J input shaft so the engine to transmission depth should be the same, I'm not sure about the motor mounts, I never checked that, they use the same parts IIRC (John made a funny). Several of the internal and external parts are the same on both motors.
You may get lucky and the 225 will just drop into place.

I had a similar situation-put a 198 in a 2A over 40 years ago. Jeep still had a T90. Used a T90J input shaft. The motor mounts were the same as the 225 mounts and the adaptor was- I'm pretty sure- same as for any 90 degree GM engine bellhousing.

I mentioned possibly adapter because there were adapter bellhousings to go from Buick 198/215 to T-90 that had the adapter cast into the bellhousing. TransDapt made one for sure. I owned one that was NOS still in the box years ago.
If the adapter is a removable unit with standard GM transmission pattern then most GM bellhousings can work.

Just to complicate things, the factory Buick 198 V6/215 V8 manual alloy bellhousing had the correct bolt pattern for the T90, and the short T90 4 cyl input shaft mated them together like they were intended by the factory; no adapters needed.
I built 3 Jeeps back in the day (2 w/V8, 1 w/V6) using these factory parts. The clutch linkage was the only thing I had to cobble together.

I have a 198 that was all rebuilt and has very low miles on it. Haven't been able to find anyone that wants it. Might take care of your problem.
