Anyone here ever replace the front yoke seals while the tcase was in the willys? I'm trying to think why it wouldn't be advisable and haven't come up with a reason. It will be on a hoist.

Any other tips on these seals?

yes it can be done you need a good seal puller and a installing tool . also pack inside of seal with grease , to prevent spring from popping off when installing . put RVT on splines for yoke . seal I like to use is National oil seal 450185 . its double sided . like original

Thanks--and thanks for the part number. Do they carry the felt seal as well and if so do you know the part number off hand? I read something about using two of those to prevent leaks. Anybody ever do that?

I double-sealed mine. The recess in which the seals fit is deep enough, you can put two seals in each one. Make sure you polish the shafts. If there is any roughness, it will roll the seals and the springs that keep the seals tight around each shaft will pop out.

Right now I have both the front and rear drive shafts off. I see replacing the front seals at this time shouldn't be a major task, but what about the race and bearing and on the rear I have always had problems with my speedometer so I need to replace my 4 gear speedometer drive gear along with the race and bearing. Can all of this be done while it's up on the lift?

    Hey dude,

I made a mistake. I thought you were talking about the seals around the shifting yoke shafts in the xfer case, not the driveshaft yokes. I double-sealed the shifting shafts. I should have noticed when someone started talking about splines that you didn't mean those. However, for general information, since these shafts seem to be a big issue when it comes to leakage on the Dana 18, these sliding shafts can be double-sealed since the recesses are deep enough. The main thing is to ensure that they are polished. I polished mine to the point they were like a mirror. If any roughness is left there, it has a tendency to turn the seals inside out. Make sure they are well lubricated when you put them into the seals so they don't turn them inside out.
