Swinging pedals on glass?

    Has anyone done swinging pedals on a cj5 with a fiberglass tub?


    I've got the pedals and all the brackets along with the brake booster/dual MC from an 81 CJ. Just not sure if it's been done on glass. Everyone reinforces the firewall with a welded plate. Obviously, that's a tricky proposition for me.

    I used an aluminum plate on both sides of differing sizes and bolted it through with stainless bolts. My tub had a thin steel insert in the fiberglass as well.

    I used 1/8" 5052 aluminum on my 3B, engine bay side only. The pedal assembly is also supported by a steel angle running running across the bottom of the dash (also mounts steering column) which ties into 14 gauge aluminum "U" sections I glassed into the sides of the cowl. That system has been in-place since about 1975 without any hint of failure.

    Duffer, is it possible to get a picture or two of that setup? I'll need to reinforce the dash panel regardless so, angle iron across the backside that is dual purpose sounds like the ticket.

    Unfortunately, I don't have any good photos. That was done almost 4 decades back and the brake booster pretty much completely hides the firewall plate. A little of the dash bottom iron is visible on this one:

    It is sort of a piece of metal art-not a stock piece of angle. All those switches are mounted in it along with the steering column. You can see it also under the glove box. It went up and over the heater fresh air vent and back down.

    Man, that's a clean looking Jeep. Was that flaming river column worth every penny? :)

    I appreciate the picture non the less. It gives a visual representation for me. I was thinking something like the link below could be dual purpose. It would add strength to the flimsy panel (as there was just two pieces of 1 by in there before. and with all those little holes I could mount brackets or run clips to hold hoses/wires for easy clean access.

    Are you guys modifying the clutch linkage when you add these pedals? I saw that advanced adapters has a chain driven clutch linkage but it won't work on the stock 4 cylinder?

    I think most of us with the swinging pedals just go with a hydraulic clutch. A lot more flexibility in the design not to mention doing away with the frame pivot/bellcrank which can be problematic anyway.
