I know some of you must be running this setup. I have a perfectly good Delco dizzy for the V6 but I am thinking I might be better off with solid state ignition. For those of you who have it - how is it working? Any downside to setting it up this way?

And what coil are you using?

    Thanks,

    Mike

I've run a Pertonics in the V6 in my CJ3B for several years with absoutly no issues. I do carry a set of points and a condenser if something would happen.
Then again, my Commando is still running fine using the Delco with points for about 4 years. It does have about 100k less miles on the motor.
Pertronics work well if there is any wear in the distributor.

I had a terrible time with points, bought a new set of points and they wouldn't work. Put the old set in and they worked.

Anyway, for my jeep putting in pertronix made a big difference. I used factory coil for a while. It was easy to put in too.

Can't tell you what pertronix and a coil does as I added a msd box then a bigger coil (pertronix 45000 volt I believe or the 50). Backwards I know.

Several years and no downside yet. I'm using the Pertronix flame thrower coil also.

Just installed it on my v6 last week. I've had one on my VW for years now. Have never had an issue. Pretty much no maintenance, and it was easy to install. I'm using the stock coil until I can order the pertronix one. Will pack the points in my adventure bag though, just in case.

I think I'm going to go with it. Anything that adds reliability (and perhaps performance) is good for me.

As near as I can tell, they are as reliable as can be. I did do the Pertronix coil. The setup did seem to pep up the old 185k motor a bit so I would recomend The installation.

I ran Pertronix for probably 10 years in my daily driver CJ5, along with an MSD box, and MSD Blaster coil. Worked extremely well.

Does anybody have a list of part numbers for adding a pertronix setup to a Delco distributor including a pertronix flamethrower coil?

    OK GUYS
I thought I was following this but got lost
Are we changing the distributor? IF so who sells one for Buick 225 v-6
    OR
Are we talking about replacing the points and condenser unit under the stock cap and with the oem rotor?

Now if just points and condenser, what else?
I saw some part vendors in here, but that link would not open for me to see parts in the link

I agree with Unkel, I'm a bit confused as well. I thought I was following until you starting talking about returning to 1986 and the need to get 6.2 giggawatts out of your flux capasitor.

    What's the question?
Pertronix is available for the Delco 225 V6 distributors.
Pertronix is NOT available for the Prestolite 225 V6 distributor.
Pertronix does replace the Delco points and condenser inside the distributor.
The original cap and rotor are retained and re-used.

Used Delco distributors appear in the classifieds from time to time.
They can be purchased rebuilt thru your local parts house.
Just make sure they are for 225 odd fire engine.
    Simple.

Thank you sir for that response
Pertronix is solid state transistorized platform?
And adding their matching coil maximizes their replacement system ?
And adding their plug wire kit is also matched for that power increase from the coil?

And this upgrade MAY end the several cranks PRIOR to ignition on my 225 v-6 WITH the motorola system?

    Directly from their website

"A solid-state electronic ignition system. "Never change points again!"
    http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/ignitor/default.aspx

you don't have to add their matching coil, but the factory coil puts out a lower amount of voltage. You can add their coil it seems to make the system more efficient. I don't understand what you mean by maximized their replacement...

You don't need their plug wires, long as your plug wires have the correct amount of resistance and in good shape. You could just replace them with stock wires too. You could get some plug wires that have lower resistance but you are probably be a waste on a stock engine. You are welcome to try it, its something I was going to try but having the rest of the jeep tuned correctly would make a bigger difference.

Even when my jeep had points, my jeep would start right up unless it was warm. In that case the pertronix helped, it did make my jeep start a little faster as well. Your results might vary but most are pleased with Pertronixs
