Back to the Build................my shop has been ground zero for a few weeks for a remolded project offsite that is taking up my space & time.............. Finally found a little time to weld this up and re-bore the end plates and bulkheads to accept a 3" axle tube.

AND HERE IS THE OLD ANCIENT FIXTURE WE BUILT YEARS AGO FOR REAR AXLE NARROWING........IT MOUNTS ON THE CROSS SLIDE OF AN OLD 60" ENGINE LATHE. THE CHUCK HOLDS THE 3"SHELL MILL AND YOU MOVE THE TABLE IN / OUT TO CUT.............ONCE DONE YA TURN THE HOUSING AROUND AND DO THE SAME TO THE OTHER SIDE.......A DIAL INDICATOR GETS IT WITHIN +/- .001-.0015.......

LETS SEE HOW THIS NOW FITS?

NOW THE AXLES TUBES WILL HAVE DOUBLE WALL ATTACHMENT TO THE HOUSING & SHOULD BE PLENTY STRONG.........CHECK THAT OFF THE LIST! BEFORE WELDING THE TUBES IN PLACE I WILL HAVE TO BORE THE ID OF THE TUBE ON THE INSIDE AT THE PUMPKIN TO ACCEPT AN AXLE SEAL..........STILL A FEW THINGS TO BE WORKED OUT.........HELPED THE PINION OFFSET, BUT DID NOT TOTALLY SOLVE IT. NEED TO SEE IF I CAN SPREAD THE SPRINGS OUT A LITTLE? NEEDS A LITTLE MORE TWEAKING

Awesome stuff.... My question is, how are you planning to secure the housing to the leaf spring? Doesn't look like much room for a u-bolt...

I was thinking the same thing… where does the inner U bolt fit? I am sure Terry has a plan… Nice work nonetheless.

Jon,

Yep , that is why I mentioned above that I might widen the frame a little to move the springs out / over a bit..........9/16" U-bolts will work , but maybe not reversed. Everything is still pretty fluid & just tacked together for right now. I just needed to squeeze that housing down a little first and see where it took me.

My real problem is trying to keep the WMS at 61" up there so as not to have allot of tire sticking out. My goal was to try and keep about 40% of the tire inboard of the body which would also keep the track width down.........Lot's of places I like to go the trails can get narrow.

The positive offset wheels help, but the huge 1 ton spindles & robust 9" housing and related Pinion offset at the spring as well as tire turning clearance inside and overall track width..........is just a direct result of the 61"............... Just not allot of room to package all that stuff.

I'm still resisting making it any wider...........I'll mock everything up and see if I have full turning radius inside to keep the tires off the springs and frame..........nothing but sparks right now.

Thanks for the response.

This is what I'm planning to do...

[IMG][/IMG]

I'm planning to weld a couple of these on the inside of the spring. I can't get my inner u-bolt to work good. The housing is at one angle and the spring is another. The inner u-bolt is at a different angle than the outer u-bolt. I think a couple grade 8 bolts with lock washers will work fine.

I really don't have that type of problem with the placement of the U-bolts as it just widens my width or increases the offset................Not sure I have ever seen a Grade 8 coupling nuts , most I've seen were grade 2-5.......you could track down some tall Grade 8 nuts from the spring guys like Bett's in the Bay Area.........but if you weld on them the temper will go away..........1/2" unplated grade 8 U-bolts torque to 90lbs while 9/16" to 125 lbs.

Love to see what your doing...........send me a picture to my PM.........

I was planning to go 5/8ths... I hadn't considered the heat treating... I would think a weld cold enough not to affect the heat treating wouldn't be hot enough to be strong...

Jon, ..............also on U-bolts and related fixtures that stretch a non-plated bolt or nut has a higher torque rating........that's why you'll never see a good u-bolt that has been plated.

Back to the build............Here's where the Rubber meets the Road. KM2's 37x12.50x17 on 8.50" Walker Evans Positive offset Bead Locks. 5 on 5.5" Spacing with 5/8" studs and NASCAR 1" lug nuts. Not the biggest tire in the World but suitable enough for Street , Rocks and Trail use..........plus I am still trying to keep the COG down........The 17's are necessary to get a big 14" rotor inside the wheel to stop this rig with heavy tires and Automatic Transmission. That coupled with the 1-ton components up front makes the packaging of the axles and suspension a bit of a challenge.

ONE TON FORD INNER C'S , SPINDLES AND MODERN UNIT BEARINGS SHOULD MAKE THIS NICE AND STRONG.

GOING TO HAVE TO BUILD SOME MORE FIXTURES TO HOLD ALL THESE PARTS ON THE AXLE AS THEY GET MOCKED UP

Are you going to flip the U-bolts? That would appear to come very close to providing sufficient clearance to go by the drop-out housing flange. More very nice work!

Back to the build...........Sorry , been real busy lately on other projects , the Jeep gets to sit and watch as I come and go. Although this project is always running around inside my head even though I'm not here much........A few things are still bothering me on the front end , but I'm working on that , and also looking beyond that a little further back on the chassis I may have to take the frame apart and re-cut the joints to make a little more width in the middle of the frame for better exhaust clearance..........That's why I just tacked things together just in case I had to make a change down the road.....may still be OK but I need to mock up my exhaust system and front drive-line before I go much further........

HERE IS WHERE I MAY HAVE TO RE-CUT THE CHASSIS TO WIDEN THE REAR.

Yeah, the neighbor is running a D60 and a 14 bolt. "Um Scott, is that 4 cyl going to be able to move it"? Hemi is supposedly going in next year.
