Have a 63 CJ5 and hood rattles something bad....figure I should replace all the hinges but not sure which (hood or cowl) is worn out. There is not any insert or anything to buffer between the two is there? Or is it metal on metal?

Your hood should be lift off hinges, with a slot in them so it can be removed. The hood actually should float in the hinges at the cowl, no contact with the cowl, and set on the cotton cord on the grill. I would look at the grill and make sure that it is not setting on the metal keepers instead of the cotton fabric.

A pair of Belleville or disk springs will take the slop out of the hinges but they do make it more difficult to seat the hood back on after removal-only a problem if you want to remove the hood on a regular basis.

I did much the same thing on the Yellow Barn Find, I got a pair of spring washers from the local Ace Hardware to stop the side to side banging from the hood hinges.

I used a simple zip tie on the hinge shaft to stop the side to side slop.

Thanks all. Do they sell the "weatherstrip" for the hood contact points?

I use rubber adhesive to fix these problems, this is what we use to isolate doors from cold. I had some meters left, works well.
Also for the hard-top, the tailgate...
I use also old air-chambers, I cut the rubber at the good size.

on the grill side I used the old serp belt off my tundra and use heat shrink on the hood pins

There are after market hinges available that don't have the slot in them, that way no one can take your hood when you are not around. They might have less movement and noise.

One thing that I done to make mine a lot more quiet was to replace the windshield to cowl rubber. That made the windshield rattle go away, and the whole Jeep tighter.

Yes, but those aren't necessarily rattle free either, the pins can work loose, and while not a lift off job, it certainly take less than five minutes to remove the 6 bolts if one is inclined to hang a rip on the hood. I had to spot weld the pins in a stainless pair of those. Think they were Acme's.

I've got to ask, how many jeep hoods are being stolen?

Usually you can't give them away. I've even brought some home from the dump.

Yeah I like the old slotted hinges but must control the rattle. Sounds like my jeep is falling apart when cruising down the road. New spongs and shocks might help too. Will try the grill to hood strip with the rivets first.
