If its for the F-head, you're going to need to order it. No place is going to have it in stock. Maybe you can have it shipped to your hotel, if thats where you are going?

I read your post as saying you need the drive part, but not the whole starter, is that correct?

We have good rebuilders in France, for electric parts too. Maybe it is the solution.

When I was looking for a drive for mine I was looking in the $75 range from Walchs or Kaiser Willys. Got the whole Toyota starter for under $50.

I got mine at Rock Auto and being in Canada and only an hour from the border had it sent to my shipping address in Michigan so shouldn't be a problem for them to send it to your hotel. I was just over there checking them out and they've gone up to around $55 plus shipping. $17 or so of that is core charge which I didn't worry about.

What happens at Customs when you try to carry that home?

I think I would check with Toyota dealers in France before trying to bring one back from the US on an international flight.

Yep that is normal. It takes the engine running to throw the drive back.

Since it is sticking out you might have trouble getting it mounted because it will be trying to mesh with the flywheel teeth. I recently fixed the one on my wagon and I had a shop spin it back before I installed it.

I personally don't know how, that's why I took it to the shop. I would imagine if you can get it installed it should work as Walt said. I was just mentioning that you might have trouble getting it to line up to make you aware of that.
