Has anyone fabricated an E brake on a flat fender using the dash mounted handle to the rear axle (Dana 44)? Pictures?

Yeah, I would love to see that too. My dash E brake and the stock driveshaft mounted one is terrible. New shoes and all.

DJ5's used a dash handle with drum parking brakes, there's a pic of the setup in the FSM someplace.

Factory Service Manual, reprints are available from a number of sources.

In the mean time here's a parts diagram from a parts manual (also available as a reprint)-

Is there any way to put a T case brake on a Dana 20? I have a complete set up from a Dana 18.

Yes I have. I used Lokar cables from drums to bell crank and the original cable from dash handle to bell crank. I had to fabricate bell crank and bracket which I attached to the transfer case cross member. At this time it is not working as well as I hoped it would but I believe once I get the correct bell crank ratio figured out, it will be fine.

I guess I should edit my original post. Thanks to your question, I decided to go out to the shop today and see what adjustments I needed to do to get the e-brake working properly. I re-adjusted the bell crank giving me a little more leverage when pulling the handle and now the e-brake works good.

One of those caddy calipers with a bracket and a disk with a custom center flange? Seems easy really. only problem is getting a proper caliper that can woe without brake fluid and just with a cable without damage of problems with it.

Wow. this might not be too hard to do.

    I used Lokar EC-80FU cables.

With a 14" long drive shaft, I didn't feel I had enough room for that type of set up.

I can see your point. I have plenty of room though and already have the drum setup on a D18. looks clean.

Thanks for the photos. Looks good. What rear are you using and did the cables fit into the brake assembly? I see the Lokar cables you used are for a 56 Chevy and the brake drum ends seem different from the Dana 44 11" drum assembly I am using. Does the locking nut on the cable ends just go inside the backing plate? The stock cables snapped in the backing plates.

I am using a D-44 and yes the cables fit the D-44 11" drum assembly correctly. The ends of the cables have a lug (for lack of a better term) that engages the brake actuation arm within the drum assembly. Same as the factory cables do. These cables are the cut to length type. So once you have established your length needed, you cut the cable housing, insert the cable into the housing and leaving extra length for the clamp, cut it. If you look at the Lokar catalog page 31 you will see "Dana" listed.

If you do decide to do this, you might consider doing something similar to what I did. If you look closely to my pictures, you will see where I used a small (1/16" i.d.) rubber grommet to help seal the ends of the cable housings. My thought was, the cable housings face forward and I wanted to try and prevent debris from entering into the cable housing.

    Hope this helps.
