Has anyone fabricated a set of door saftey straps. I think I can make them and save some cash. Does anyone know the best source for the materials? How did yours turn out?
    Thanks

original strap would be canvas webbing . but I would guess you could use a old seat belt

I bet a modified leather belt would work well...
Seat belt material should work well and be cheap. Just go to the wrecking yard and pick your size and color.
A modified canvas belt should work well also.

Are you going for OEM or function? What type of top?
The Koenig on my 3B has the remains of a cotton type of strap screwed to the door bottom, if it was still intact I would have removed it by now, I like the ability to open the door 180 deg. Much easier to work inside.
Most any fabric or craft store should have what you want.

My original straps were made from web material, same as my army belt. I made new ones from web belt material bought at the local thrift store. Can make both sides out of a belt, which can usually be purchased for $1.00.

My original hinges were screwed diirectly to the door and had a u shaped bracket screwed to the dash on the other end, with a 1/4" l shaped rod to hold it in place. Sorta like a spring shackle. This allowed the pin to be pulled and the door opened 180 degrees or to allow the doors to be removed.

Me too. The YJ straps fit over an upright pin on the door post, so you can them slip off anytime.

If I have my full doors on, it will hit the mirrors long before it gets to 180 degrees.

it kinda depends on what you have to atatch them to. usually is a simple footman loop on the door with a rod on the door jam that allows you to easily slip off the strap. They are easy to make from 1" nylon strap. just get some uphulstery thread and sew loops at the ends to whatever length you need.

I do have to roll the windows down so I clear the mirrors. The doors just miss the front fenders on the 3B by about 3/8 inch.

I'm writing about the strap on some old models that was used in place of doors. These were made of canvas but had some unique hardware. At best they may have given the illusion that you couldn't fall out! I would like to use black leather but I am having difficult finding appropriate hardware; particularly a "snap hook" that will accomadate flat leather straps about 1 1/2" wide. Also a piece that I can attach one end of the strap just behind or in the doorway opening. Thanks

OK, now I understand. My MB had all the loops and eyebolts but it didn't have the straps when I got it.
I sat here and thought about it and went out to look at both of my 3Bs. There is still a notch cut out of the cowel in the upper corners where the eyebolts were on the MB.

    I was wondering.

Look into military surplus for the straps and hardware. My m-715 had a rear cargo nylon strap with a flat metal snap-hook such as you describe, could be adapted.

You can buy them made up...

Leather would not stand up well to weather. But a draft-horse harness shop would have the leather and hardware.

For actual safety, a seat belt would be a whole lot more effective. The previous owner of my '57 used to tie her young nieces into the seats with manilla rope!
