Okay, new to this so give me a break. I have a 1974 cj5 Renegade with 305 three speed, original. Runs like new but frame and body are shot. However it is a great little snowplow truck. I just purchased a 1976 CJ7 258 4 speed, original. Great frame and restorable body with hardtop. I want this to be my toy. I would like to swap the motors and end up with the cj7 with 304 4 speed and my plow truck with the 258 three speed. First off, do I have everything I need (except exhaust of course) to do that. Will bell housings mate or swap? from what I understand I will need to swap one of the engine frame mounts? Do I keep the alternators with the motor or with the body? Thanks guys, just want to know what I am looking at before I disassemble either one. I am a qualified mech. and have the books but the part number areas are hard to figure out.

AFAIK, The 258 and 304 engine bolt pattern is the same. If the alternators are different, keep them with the body. It should be a pretty straightforward swap.

I went from a 258 to a 304 and it was super easy.....exhaust, throttle cable, and motor mounts were the only changes I remember. my 304 had electronic ign so I did change the wiring a little.
