I am getting the exhaust sucked back into the cab. This seems to be a fairly common problem. My exhaust is currently routed straight out the back and stops even with the bumper. I've read that running the exhaust out and down behind the rear tire will solve this problem. Can someone who solved this post some pics of the angle and how the pipes should run in relation to the rear springs?

"solve" is relative. Mine exits behind the driver rear tire and I still get a few whiffs of exhaust. Kind of hard not to in these old Jeeps. Funny story...was offroading with a bunch of "newer" Jeeps (TJ's, XJ's, etc.), at the end of the run we stopped at a gas station to air up, I also popped the hood to check oil before the ride home, one guy walked over and said, "I knew that was big 'ol V8, I was smelling it all day when I was behind you!"

Best shot I have right now...

The original tail pipe had a turned-down/turned-out tip like that. Made a sound like an open air valve at WOT, but I guess it kept the fumes out. I don't remember any excessive exhaust smell.

45* angle out the rear corner of the tub is the best way we've found with lots or experimenting. We also tack weld in some light steel rod inside the opening to keep the tip from getting crushed on rocks and whatnot.

Thanks for the pics and tip on reinforcing the exhaust tip. They are just what I needed. Work just announced they "may" be cutting hours so all projects are on hold for now. Once things get settled this is first on the list. Tired of smelling like jeep all the time.

I'm looking at doing the same thing to reduce exhaust in the cabin, mine exit right in front of the rear tire. Did you angle 45* down AND towards the rear?

Yes, 45 down and out. The pipe comes out right behind the drivers side rear tire. I still smell exhaust with the jeep opened up when I decelerate, but I is a million times better.

I'll resurrect this instead of starting a new thread. My wife finds it hard to accept that exhaust being pulled into the cab is inherent with these old Jeeps but I haven't added the turn out. I have an f-head and the exhaust comes out the rear on the passenger side with no turn to the side. All of the descriptions above have it coming out on the driver's side.

    1. Is everyone discussing f-head or dauntless engines?
    2. In a stock f-head application, should it come out the passenger side or the driver's side?

On my F 134, the exhaust is on the driver side, just before the rear tire.
But I don't smell anything, except with the Choke in the first minutes.

You know that has always been a problem regardless of motor............to the rear beyond the rear tire I think is best the farther back the better..........some say turn the tip out 45 degrees or go as far back as you can near the rear bumper............but once there which way do you turn them?

Jeeps with there in the breeze high windshields , soft or hardtops while driving along will create a low pressure zone just behind the vehicle.........which as the air tumbles and becomes stagnant in that area will build up and try to bring air & fumes forward..............you get the same near effect when cruising / crawling around at low speed via the turbulence created by the rear tire rotation moving air forward..........short wheelbase issue.........mine were always behind the rear tire and turned out but I still had the same complaint as others , at times I could smell the exhaust. Maybe dumping it closer to the ground............but that adds another problem.

[IMG]mine points out the rear corner at a 45 to the side and sticks out about two inches past the tub not too much recirculating...you can just see it in this pic...
