I have a starter condition... This is on an f134, 64 model cj5.
The teeth on the starter has ground off about 1/4" from the end. It seems like maybe the flywheel ring gear
could be bad ??? The starter itself did'nt have any excess play and seemed to be in good shape other than the
gear on the end. I can see the ring gear through the starter hole, but I can't see it well enough through these
bi-focals to tell the condition of its teeth.
I put a back up starter with a new bendix on it on, but it would not release from the ring gear after starting.
Pulled it and the gear on the end had some scoring on the teeth after only 3 starts.. [this starter has 1/4" end play]
I think that is too much as the first one had only a paper thin bit of play.
Any body have any advice ?

Maybe you could take a close-up photo, with flash, then study that by enlarging it?

Were either of the starters rebuilt? Was the motor rebuilt? If either the ring gear or the bendix's were replaced on the starters I would check the tooth counts on all and get back to us.

Scoutpilot, you seem to have (on my screen) a slightly weird font that you are using.

    Why be normal?
