No, the locking glove box is highly desirable.

It is supposed to be a tux specific item, mine has one but the key was lost.

Mine was missing a key too. Dropped the lock off at a locksmith and for $20 he had two keys made. Some kind of witchcraft if you ask me.

Mine came from the mailbox section of one of the local Ace hardware stores.

You could buy them over the parts counter back in the day. So just because it has one, does not mean if came like that from the factory. Just FYI.

I have always had the opinion that the CJ5 and CJ6 glove box door came lockable, and the wagons and trucks came non locking. This is strictly opinion based on the fact the CJ's most likely didn't have a hard top and the wagons and trucks of course did. This is just my FWIW. ;)

Mmm. I don't think so. I've seen lots of '70s CJs come through the dealer lots, and as best I can recall they did not have locking glove boxes. My '70s parts book does not show a locking button available for the CJ models.

IMO they are kind of pointless anyway, because you can pull the glove box door open with your fingers, locked or not. May as well let the potential thief look inside and find nothing valuable, than risk the damage from someone forcing it open.

I was thinking more pre-AMC influence as far as the CJs, but I do agree they are pretty much pointless. I certainly wouldn't consider my valuables secure in one.

My dad's 61 is sitting out in my driveway. He bought it new in 61. It is totally stock and unmodified in any way. I never noticed if it did or didn't. Just went out to the driveway to check. Yep, locking. No idea where the key was or could be. FYI - It's got a hard top on it so he probably never used the key.

My dad's '69 & my '70 boith have the original glove boxes. Non-locking.

When I got my rig the glove box door was missing. I eventually found a used door with no latch. My solution was to go to the local jeep dealer and buy a new jeep glove box door locking latch with key with the name Jeep on it. I was surprised at the easy fix.

My 1974 CJ5 does NOT have a locking glove box. Which bring up the question, why do they call it a "glove box"? Thanks PierreDnepr for the link. I have looking for a lock for my glove box.

My 57 has a locking glove box but the lock has fallen apart. What year did they first come out for the CJ5?

Tonk ('55) & Maggie ('59) both had locking boxes , never had the keys for Maggie but Tonk was keyed the same as the ignition.

As I understand it, the glove compartment dates back to the horseless carriage days. Early cars were usually open to the elements, and gloves and goggles were essential equipment.

Just for reference, my 62 cj5 has a locking glove box, the key is sadly long gone.
