Steering wheel making my hands black !?

The weather has changed. Yesterday was hot, sunshine, and now 10° Celsius less, and rain.
My Jeep stays in a barn, doors open.

This morning I go to start the machine, the steering wheel is wet.
I drive some seconds to go outside, and I look at my hands : plenty of black marks.

This is an old black steering wheel, does it happen to you?

It is "exuding" some component. It is probably made of bakelite?

I wait for answers, with the good jokes as usual.:p

Likely somebody painted it at some point in its like.

A lace-on steering wheel cover will fix that.

Sometimes a good cleaning with hand cleaner has helped mine. Your rag gets really black.

All 3 of mine will turn my hands black if it is wet. Must be something with the material that they are made out of.

    Very beautiful Jeep, Army Grunt.
I understand that this material is reacting to temp change and humidity.
It is very unpleasant, sticky, and I'll try to find some cover.
Probably not as beautiful as the one of Army Grunt, but it is mandatory.
For now, I put on gloves!

Mine does the same, got caught in a rain storm couple weeks ago, hands, shirt, jeans, everything within a foot of the wheel got a little black coloring on them. It did wash off easily enough.

I always thought it was the jeep giving back the grease that came off of my hands...

I used appliance paint on mine no problems.

I also did the JB weld cracking fixes..(in my build thread)

Appliance paint is sold in spray cans for touching up scratches on , oddly enough, appliances- stoves, refrigerators, etc.

JB Weld is a brand of epoxy sealant that has metal particles in it. A number of people have used it to repair the cracks that develop in the plastic coating of steering wheels as they age. I've used it myself ( & the appliance paint) to fix my steering wheel.

There are other methods & materials that can be used to fix the cracks- one person I know breaks the covering off of really bad steering wheels into small pieces & dissolves them in acetone to make a thick paste. He then uses the paste to fix the cracks in the wheel he wants to repair.

I repaired mine 4 years ago with JB Weld and Appliance epoxy paint shown above and still looks new today. Does not color my hands or cloths.

Thanks, I'll try to find this. I already repaired the cracks at the jonction branches/center with epoxy glue.
Hope not to be obliged to take a plane to US =
1 - they will arrest me at landing for all sorts of reasons
2 - when I'll be out of jail, I'll go and buy this product, because in France we don't paint our refrigerators (or artistically, you know how we are)
3 - I'll go back to jail because I carry this product with me trying to enter the plane.
    Life is difficult.
When I was young, we use to visit airports to see the planes, was a tourist trip.
And when I was travelling by plane, no control at all, just come and show ticket ...

Not that I'd wish it on ANYBODY....
But if you had Ebola you could skate right into the US. :)

Yes. When I was a kid the Pan-Am pilots would let me sit in the cockpit and wear the headphones. No more.
Now we take off our shoes and belts like prisoners, and allow ourselves to be groped. The terrorists have won.

It doesn't have to be appliance paint, really anything that is resistant to ultra violet light will work- just make sure your wheel is very clean before applying- a good wipe down with acetone works wonders in helping the paint stick.
