    Hello everyone,
I am in the process of finishing up a 1975 CJ5 project with a nearly bolt in/together 4FB1 Isuzu Diesel conversion. The tub is almost completely restored, but the rear wheel arches that were hacked out. There is no remaining stock "lip" left, so I can't even center the arch correctly. I have looked online exhaustively, haven't found any reference pics close enough to the arch to accurately guesstimate for my comfort. I have posted elsewhere asking for help, and a week and several hundred views later, still don't have the info I need. I received "the arch is @ 32", and 13" inches tall. Whatever that is supposed to do to help me restore the arch. What I am hoping is to return the arch to factory dimensions, and center it in the stock location. I can fabricate it myself easily enough, and not really inclined to spend almost $200 for replacement panels vs. a few hours of fabricating.
I am nearly begging that someone who owns a nice original, steel, CJ5 that has never been "Bubba'd" for "swampers", could take a few minutes to read a tape/and or a square accurately, take a few notes(and perhaps pics if you are uber awesome) and please share:
wheel arch radius/circumference above the trailing edge radius
radius of the leading edge at the rocker panel,
trailing edge radius(as it appears about half of the leading edge),
a reference point(or a few for accuracy)for the wheel arch centering. Floor riser to main arch radius, distance from top "triangle" stamping to arch, or filler stamping to arch?

Hope this makes sense to somebody, and some kind soul out there can find the time and inclination to help me and my CJ5 out. [IMG]

Nice Jeep, Dozer, and Rig. Looks like you got all kinds of toys.
I don't know how much different my arches are but I could measure them as well tomorrow.

I have a 75 CJ5 with the rear wheel wells untouched.. Where do you need me to take measurements? Might help if you took a pic of yours and showed this geezer where to measure.

My gosh that diesel is so cool! I am impressed.

Would you want a paper template made up? my '73 is on blocks right now with the tires off and I could trace it on cardboard then transfer it to paper.
Heck thinking about it I might be able to set the camera up on a tripod and snap a pict to scale...
(Sounds like a second cup of coffee project for tomorrow.)
Else I may just break out the old beam compass and do it that way...

Here are my measurements of the wheel well. The measurements are a little rough but shouldn't be too much different.
top of the wheel well/ Length 33 inches
side of the wheel well/ Width was 10.5 inches

I can imagine measuring the big radius with a big compass and the straight edge. How did you measure the small radii?

Some lexan and delrin blanks I've got laying with the lathe stock, plus jar lids and cans, til I found one that fit.
Actually what I did with the radius is traced it on to cardboard laid a scale on it, took a picture, imported that into AutoCAD, scaled it to the scale, then
constructed a 3-point circle on it. Take a look at the slide show link. :)

    Wow!
I can't express enough gratitude! I posted elsewhere on another forum that shall remain unnamed, and after waiting a week with over 150 people reading my request, I couldn't get but 2 off the cuff responses that were not much help at all! THIS forum is awesome! A few days, and LOTS of kind souls trying to help me out! I have all the dimensions and reference to do the repairs! Holy crap middle.road! That is EXACTLY what I needed! I can't express enough gratitude, Kind Sir!!! And thank you ALL of ya for your interest and help! ALL of ya, THANK YOU ALL!! Ya have all earned my loyalty as far as :AMC: forums is concerned! Thank You! Thank You! :D

This is my first shot at a 4x4, and diesel vehicle. I have always liked Jeeps, so to actually own a vintage, Toledo made one of my own, I am very thrilled, especially now it is almost together and operational. And I am trying very hard to do things right, as far as the restoration goes. Have always been a fast and loud gas street rodder('65 Galaxie, '73 240Z, '94 9C1 Caprice, ect). So I have a lot to learn about off road tech, and Jeep particulars.

    jeep toss
For the record, the dozer, semi tractor, and whatnot aren't mine. I am using my bosses' garage, welder, ect.. All that stuff is his. If I had his money, the Jeep would be done by now! However, I do service, repair, and operate it all. And you have no idea how much crap he has. There are 2 Cat D9's, 5 Moline tractors, semi trailers full of motors, ect. He is the only guy I know who has a "hot rodded" "Payloader" front loader. It's a '74 military wheel loader, still in vintage camo paint, with a Drott "4 way" bucket. The original anemic, unreliable 4 cyl diesel removed, and a Cummins "big cam" semi motor installed. I often spend my work days operating a Cat 980B. His biggest problem is he is always running out buying MORE crap to sit around and rot(that '07 Pete has been sitting there for 2 years now), instead of spending money to refine and maintain what he already has. Kinda annoying and frustrating, actually.

Thanks for the kind compliments, gents. The motor is an Isuzu 4FB1 diesel, not a Cat! :D I am thrilled it all bolts together as factory, even the clutch is a hodgepodge of Isuzu/Jeep factory parts. The only issue I have to deal with drivetrain wise now is that with the Jeep being a '75, with a (I believe) a 4" lift installed by a PO, and the T5 and D300 being from @ '83, my driveshafts are not the right length. And again, I don't have huge money to toss around buying the most expensive stuff out there. I tried very hard to mount the engine at the same angle as the rear pinion, which is pretty steep. I moved the trans crossmember forward till the rear bolt holes were in the forward most frame holes, then drilled the forward holes in the frame, but still in the frame re-inforcement metal. Problem is, the rear driveshaft is almost "bottomed out", nearly as short as it will go. So, I have to either have to get it shortened, or buy a shorter rear driveshaft from a later CJ5(or other Jeep). If any of you have any thought on this, I'd love to hear yer opinions and input about how much travel I need at the driveshaft splines, ect. If you need pics of anything, just ask.

Thanks again, Gentlemen. Ya already have been amazingly awesome!

If you are faced with a situation of short driveshaft length and a steep angle, you will need to use a shaft similar to the Tom Woods shown in the link. http://www.4xshaft.com/ My driveshaft measures about 13" and I have no problems with it. I purchased my driveshaft from a local shop which did save me some cost over the nationally advertised brands.

Middle.road's posting is most impressive and another example of the professionalism and helpfulness of the members here. VERY WELL DONE

Just how long will this irreplaceable information be available on this site? If it is OK with the rules of this forum, I want to copy this to my personal jeep files on my computer and burn to disk. What say you?
