If each was new, what would the advantage be in choosing one or the other ?

[omitting the fact that one was oem] For the f head engine.

Someone with fist hand knowledge will know better, but from what I've read on this board the solex is a more modern carb, and will give you better fuel economy. I'm planning on going with the solex.

I've never seen the need for solex unless the Carter can't be found.

I have not found one. I would like to know which would be the best if both were new condition. I'm using a solex now,
and have no gripes at all from it. In the process of rebuilding a yf for a spare.
Some say the yf is the best, and was wondering what they based their opinion on. As far as the "nos" yfs that is floating
around ebay and some parts houses, at 300.00 and probaly made in india or chinia, I''ll stay with solex......

For a show piece I'd go with a properly rebuilt and re-bushed Carter YF.

For a driver I'd go with the Solex hands-down.

They are both good carbs and each has its quirks, but finding the Correct YF and getting it brought back to factory specs will set you back some bux.

There are some folks who insist that you have to have a pressure regulator inline before the Solex, but I ran one for years on an L-head with the stock pump and no issues.

I've got a Solex on my MyersManx Dunebuggy and in 12 years, I haven't been able to get it adjusted properly.
If I had the money, I'd find a way to change it over to a 2-barrel progressive Holley.

I have a solex, just clean the filters, and my Jeep runs perfectly. This Solex 32 PBIC was used on many cars and was a good product. Of course in France it is easier, but plenty of users and parts, as it seems on internet.

The one I got off ebay from the guy in Turkey sez '"Made in USA" om it, seems to be late production- it's held together with toex screws instead of slotted.

It says 'om', and not 'oem' ? How has it worked?

    Typo-

"sez '"Made in USA" oN it,"

Fine so far but that's confined to running in the garage. However I know others who have obtained these things from the same source & they reportedly run fine. This echo's other's experience-

The solex runs good once its tuned in. There is no choke on it. Its an enrichment that dumps more gas in when you pull the "choke"
I had a few issues with very cold starts on wimpy when I had him. Plowing in the winter.
I put the carter back on so I could get the choke feature back.
if I drove it more in summer and garaged it in winter id go with the solex.

Why spend a lot of money on a new carburetor when you could go TBI?

Get a 1V throttle body from a 151 GM and run a Megasquirt. Better starting and running in all temperatures, a little better performance, and much more reliable. Throttle bodies are pretty generic, once you figure out the connections ... just pick what you can find at the junkyard and try it.

If you get the whole setup from a 151, you can hack the computer to tune it. A little less accessible than the Megasquirt, and maybe no cheaper after you buy a PROM burner, but an alternative.

I order a new Solex carb for my F134 - found the assembly quality and casting to be sub-part on some units. It seems to vary from one unit to the next. That said, it does work ok once installed but I never ran a Carter so I can't really compare.
