    Incredible.

But not sure I can see any actual "cosmoline". That stuff was pretty nasty.

I once bought a NOS mil-surp oil pump. After I mounted it, the oil filter then blew clean off the engine - the cosmoline had frozen the pressure-relief bypass valve in the pump.

Pretty sure the factory crate engines were not coated with anything like Cosmoline. I suspect they were sprayed with oil and put into the plastic. Even the residual oil from machining and assembly may have been enough. Nothing was typically done to clean them up before installation.

Do a search on Google Images for "cosmoline", and you'll find lots of photos of stuff coated with real Cosmogoo. That stuff's nasty, like hardened coagulated axle grease, ain't nothing else like it. Smells real special too.

1969 oddfire. I haven't had a chance yet to even lift out of the box. The photos really don't show it but the exterior block has something on it if not cosmoline. Nothing on the timing cover though.

@timgr... I think your probably right and the stuff is all dried up after all these years.

Does anyone have any information on the part number attached to the timing cover? #992243 That'll most likely set the record straight.

It's a proper Jeep PN, from ca 1968-70. I don't have any books that old. Not much of a leap to assume it's the PN for a 225 short block.

The guy I bought it from didn't give me any reason to think otherwise since his jeep was a '69. He said he was so impressed with the 225 when he bought his jeep new, he bought the extra motor soon after.

I hope that you have oil inside because in the past we had engines rusted inside.
But if it is a new engine there is probably a protection in the cylinders.
It is a very good bargain in all cases.

That stuff is not going to be too easy to get off with out a good bit of elbow grease. My first time dealing with it was when I got an old Nagant revolver.

I knew a GM executive who bought a new Corvair when they were discontinued - he had a unused spare engine stored in a barrel of oil.

    It's 9.0 Compression Ratio.
Technically it's a Commando short block.
992243 is for use WHT meaning it has a flex plate.
Other than the flex plate it's identicle to short blocks that are noted for use WST.

I wonder if the crank is machined to accept a pilot bushing...

    Yes.
All Dauntless engines used the same identical crankshaft # 992449.
The only difference here is the flex plate used with hydraulic transmissions.

If you haven't already washed off the cosmoline, you might consider scraping off the bulk of it and saving it in a can. Cosmoline hasn't been made in a while and is sought after by gun people to protect and preserve old guns.
