M38A1 What is the light on the fuel tank for? Is it a low level light or something added?

Light? :? If you're referring to the smaller port on the left, that is your sending unit. There isn't anything plugged into it probably because your electrical system was converted to 12v. The port on the right is your pickup tube and vent.

Part of the Military standard. Sealed electrical connectors.

It is a good idea: in most M38a1the fuel gauge doesnt work right (24 to 12 conv., wrong sending unit, bad ground to the tank).
So the most usefull way is to open the cap and look inside the tank to see how much fuel you have and it is always dark inside.
Why not having a small light inside the tank?
    :)

... you are not the first to say that and there was a Beduin who try this method.
My father served in Sinai (today in Egypt) many years ago and he told me that one day a Beduin arrived (brought by others) to their medic point after he tried to see how much gas left in the tank ... he suffered very bad burns.

In France we don't say Beduins, we say Belgians. In Belgium, they say Frenchies, in Russia, they say Ukrainians...

I have met some Beduins in the desert, they don't use gas, but water (in the camels). It is less risky.

By the way, they were very poor people, under their black tents... and some kilometers further, their cousins were driving Lamborghini or Bugatti Veyron.
