I found a Dana 20 at a steal but it is bolted up to a t14. Will it connect to my t15 without issues?

I believe it will. I think all Jeep Dana 20's will interchange pretty readily with other Jeep transmissions if they were normally paired with a Dana 20 to begin with. There might be some differences in shifters though (J truck vs. CJ etc.) on the Dana 20.

So here is what I am up against. The transfer case on my jeep is making a noise and needs to be rebuild. I found a transmission and tcase with bell housing and drive shafts, and the guy only wanted 60 bucks. My plan was to rebuild the Dana 20 that I bought one weekend then swap the two the next weekend... from the sounds of it though I am going to have to pull the case out of my jeep before I can finish rebuilding the other... so would it just be best to pull and rebuild the case that is already in the jeep?

I've found that some d20s have a recess machined to clear some shafts that protrude from the rear of a t15, and some do not. I learned the hard way, and had to machine the mounting surface of a d20 that I had intended to swap into my jeep.

so it is very likely that I am not understanding, but couldn't I just use a yoke that fits the t14 spline count on the rear output rather than changing out the output shaft?

He's referring to the gear that runs outside the rear of the transmission case, but it fits internal to the transfer case. That gear is on the transmission shaft, called the output shaft.

This chart shows differences in gears used https://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transfer_case_gears_grid.htm

I read it as T14 has 10 splines on the shaft that the gear fits on. T15 has 6.

Splines seen in center hole. Gear shown not exact, but just used for explanation purposes.

Thanks oleblue that was very helpful. When I pull the transfer case out of my jeep will the gear stay with the transmission or the transfer case? I assume transfer case? If so will I be able to just pull the gear out by hand and move it into the new case?

It'll stay with the transmission. There's a large nut on the end of the shaft that keeps the gear on there. I had to take an impact wrench to get that nut off.

Just to clarify, you need to pull the gear off the tranny before you pull the t-case. BTDT

On a small hole 18 transfercase this is true. On a large hole 18 or 20 case not necessary to pull the input gear.
