can anybody tell me how much of the steering column is meant to stick through the firewall?
I don’t seem to have enough meat to clamp my bracket to

I think that depends on comfort level as to where it is positioned.............I went back and looked at your build and I'm not sure what column you have there? Most aftermarket columns to fit a Jeep are around 28-30" inches but the 28" seems to be the one of choice unless your tall and have moved your seating back..............
I would get a steering wheel on that first and get seats & pedals in place before you do a final mount on any of that....comfort and getting the correct angle to the steering gear up front can really only be done once the seats are at least mocked up and your sitting in the vehicle .....................and you can clamp the column from the inside where there is more room.

interesting.. It’s a stock 73 column.. just been coated and fully welded
I was trying to really mimic the factory setting since AMC didn’t measure everybody before they built these rigs...
But since this is a custom build I should be able to make it as comfortable for the primary driver as possible..
I’m just light years away from seats and seat position I wanted to be able to knock items off the list.
I was planning on rebuilding the column this week so it was ready to plop in there when needed.

Not trying to change your plans, but getting that steering wheel , seat height and distance from the steering wheel at least mocked up before you go to print I feel is pretty important......You may be just fine where you are , but it doesn't hurt to check?
Notwithstanding the swing pedals and how your legs and knees like the distance / room below the steering wheel.........and your right it is a Custom Build and should be treated that way so the end result is what you want..........

Put the clamp on the inside? That's what I've always done.

Looked at my '75 yesterday, but there's nothing to measure. The tube does not protrude through the clamp/bracket on the outside of the firewall.

So this is a '73 column in an aluminum body? With a '73 frame and '73 steering? Then it has to have the '73 seating position too.

This looks about right - the column sticks through the dash and is held by a 2-piece clamp on the outside of the firewall, bolting to the firewall. There's no clamp on the inside. Bolts to the dash and clamped on the outside of the firewall, and the sled bracket goes over the top of the column to reinforce the dash mounting and hold the pedals.

what I wanted to try and figure out was if when I fully welded my tube to the dash bracket I inadvertently moved the position of the tube in the bracket.
for example.. if the distance from the dash bracket to the wheel on the tube is 13" stock mine now sits at 14"

Don't know if you already got the information you were looking for, but on my 74 CJ5, the bracket sticks out about 2" from firewall, and tube of column is about 3/8" past that.

yes I have a 74 column sitting outside. It should be the same as the 73.. what measurement do you need.

I think the picture above really explains it well..
just needed to see how far it sticks out of the firewall bracket before final assembly..
I decided to go with the stock column in stock location and adjust the seating position as needed..
