Did some flywheel searches but did not seem to get my questions sorted out...Please forgive my ignorance in these matters. I am doing a slow rehab on a 69 CJ5 with a 225. the PO was such a hack that I don't trust anything that was done. I picked up a second 225 that I plan on using (better compression). The flywheel ring gear on this motor is chewed up in a couple areas. If the first ring gear is good should/can I switch flywheels or have the matching flywheel machined and replace the ring gear? Will the ring gear be available(rockauto has an omix)? These engines have the same casting number. Thanks, now out to pull the trans and transfer case.

Maxx tells me that he has a new Dauntless ring gear.
It needs a home. Not sure if its OEM NOS or perhaps NORS.
He's no longer a member here.
But I can find out if your interested.

Swap flywheels. The flywheel should already be balanced. No need to worry as the flywheel balances the engine well enough to work good.

Thanks...thought I was going to get a look at my second ring gear yesterday but spent most of it on a broken exhaust manifold bolt...hopefully will get to it on Monday.

You can probably get away with swapping flywheels if they are both 225s and look the same. There were some lighter and heavier versions through the years. I have some that are about 6lbs different. It would be best if you kept the original flywheel with the original engine, provided it still has the original crank, rods, and pistons as the whole rotating mass was balanced together when new. Over the years, who knows what remains original?
When I rebuild an engine, I have the rotating mass balanced, but that seems moot with an odd-fire, though it really does run smoother above 3000rpm.
