Good thing I pulled the other head. Number 1 piston was burnt with a quarter sized hole in the top.

The cylinder wall looks OK. The spots you see in the pic are reflections. The wall shows just normal wear. I'll drop the pan, pull the piston, and mic the cylinder. If good I'll hone and install a new piston. It's a .000 engine so even if I need to overbore I can keep this block. I might have got lucky. Looks like most of the material deposited on the head.

Ouch. Wonder why? Hot plugs? Low octane? Timing?

If you need a N.O.S stock piston, the Buick Farm shows some in stock, part #1399524 at $30.00, he also has .030 O.S at $30.00 ,# 1396857. Search under 1967 special.

Looks like some minor scoring on the cylinder wall, and probably a ridge. If it were mine, it would be full rebuild time without a doubt.

It actually ran about like you would expect from water in the gas or a slightly blown head gasket. When I got home last Wednesday I left it idling and was trying to determine which side was going. I had the breather and pcv valve off and was listening, feeling, and watching while I revved it some. When it let go it immediately started running like one whole bank had cut out, started blowing a lot of air out the breather and pcv holes, and smoked the place up. I immediately shut it down at that point.
It may come down to that but the picture lies. Reflection accounts for most of the artifacts you are seeing. There is some very minor scoring but they can't be felt just seen. It feels slightly different than the other cylinders, not quite as slick, no worse than a freshly honed cylinder. I will measure, if good hone it, then measure again. There was no material in the cylinder. What wasn't deposited on the head or blown out the exhaust probably got blown into the oil pan. If I don't get good numbers I will definitely have it bored.

Always hate to see this kind of mechanical failure. Have seen it on other peoples engines but never on my own. Must be real lucky.

I had a 318 Plymouth with a piston hole like that. Chaulked it up to a debris clogged water jacket.
From the looks of the 11 o'clock passage in your cylinder head, you might want to check the block closer.

Seen alot of sled motors that looked like that one. 'Couse with a 2 stroke it's usually lean/timing issue.

If it was me . I would send block to machine shop . have it dipped . bored . new cam bearings . then you'll know what is needed for rebuild . now is the time for no short cuts . I would have heads reworked also

The heads are going to the machine shop Saturday and new valves and springs are on there way. Will be staying with stock guides and seals. Push rods and rockers are in good shape. The engine will stay in the jeep for now. I'll measure and document the cylinders this weekend and make a decision then.

At least knock the core plugs out and rake a bent coat hanger up and down the water jacket, flushing with a nozzle on the garden hose.
Better a mess in the driveway than another ventilated piston.
