I'd guess that 90% of the early CJ's out there came with 3 speeds in them.
I've been running a T90 in mine for 12 years. Would I like a 4 speed? Yes. But it's not in my budget.
I guess you had problems with yours, but they can be made to work well.

    X2.
I'm going to a four speed in the next couple years, but I don't loathe my T14.
I don't drive with a heavy foot in my Jeep. I know my rig well enough to make the T14 work without damaging anything.

It can even be a fun challenge if you want it to be.

    I enjoy it.

If you have a tight budget and are working on a Jeep, you'll have to do as much as you can yourself.

The Borg-Warner 3-speed transmissions are not complicated. They can be rebuilt on the benchtop with simple tools.

I agree with Tim. The T-90 especially is about as simple as they come. No mystery or rocket science here, just a bunch of pain in the *** little needle bearings LOL!
Rebuilding it yourself would be a good "get your feet wet" project...

I started rebuilding the T90 as a teenager - its that simple of a tranny. There are some good tutorials on it and it really does not require special tools other than snap ring pliers.

I paid a lot to have my 3 speed T 90 rebuilt, with ADA Omyx parts, at a pro shop.
Because I am in France, we have no other parts.
In Us you have better suppliers. As I saw inside the T90, you can do it yourself, but you need to make some physical efforts. And have enough space and tools. Probably you can find a rebuilt one with a guarantee ( I have a guarantee because it is a pro company).
That's the choice : pay with a guarantee or do it yourself.
To pay with no guarantee = no good. IMO
