Does anyone have a clue as to how to attache the rivets supplied with welting kits. Can't I just usde standard old rivets?

The welting I purchased from Kaiser Willys included small pieces that looked like nails with a split down the middle.
I used a screwdriver to open them up a bit after installed in grill, then I used a pair of channel locks to hold the top of the rivet and at the same time splitting the rivet so the ends fold up against the grill. Clear as mud??

I believe these are called bifurcated rivets. If they are driven against an anvil block the points are supposed to curl out and around.

About ten seconds of googling turned this up. Shows the proper "curl" to the rivets which hides the tips.

I don't think you actually need the special tool. On Model T transmission linings we just hammer them against a steel block and they curl back into the lining material, by design.

Call Carl Walck (walcks 4wd) up he sells a tool that he made from a pair of Channel-lock pliers...not cheap but they work great...

    My smelly old 2 cents...

The split rivits are available from McMaster-Carr.

For a setting tool, I had an old pair of broken nippers and just welded a small anvil on the broke off side. There is enough recess to clear the lip of the grill and managed to set all the rivits without removing anything.

    It made a sanitary installation.
