Just bought a 66 CJ5 basically stock with v6. No transmission in it when bought. Transfer case was loose in garage. Seller did not say it was the one from the jeep but said it was the correct model for the year. I did a quick search a believe that a t14 or t86 will work with stock V6. I think the transfer case is a Dana 18. It has a single lever and the numbers stamped on the case are C18-19-44 with a 5 over it and also c-18-15-24-5. I think the number are correct, was hard to make out some of them. On the adaptor part of the case the numbers c18-19-66 were stamped. Any help on identifying the transfer case or what transmission I can use would help, I am having a hard time finding a t14 or t86. I wouldn't mind changing to a 4 speed but do not want to do a lot of mods. Also it is missing the support for transfer case/transmission.

    First of all welcome,

it sounds like you got the correct dana 18 sense its a single stick, this can be converted to twin stick if desired at a later point.
measure the intermediate shaft it should be 1 1/4

This site is super helpful for transmission stuff, the link is directed to the dana 18
    http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/model_18.htm

I am not understanding what you mean by adapter part?

as for finding the t14 or t86 they come up from time to time, put a want to buy ad here in the classified section.
t86 is what should of been in it, the t14 requires an adapter on the bell housing and then that is basically it. The previous owner swapped a t14 in my 66.
You should decide what you want to put in it? t14 is nice because first gear is synchronized.
or you can swap to a four speed, there is several members here who have does transmission swaps here. I am working on one for example.
do a search on the site for transmission swap, google is easier to use. site:earlycj5.net (then what your searching)

the cross member is easily obtained, If you look in classified section some of the members might be parting their jeep so you might be able to pick one up.

Hopefully this helps, and feel free to ask any more questions :)

Thanks for the help. I will research the areas you mentioned. on the input side of the transfer case it looks like a bolt on piece. The number noted were stamped into this piece

The teacher is most important for the grandson and the FSM (Factory Service Manual) is most important for the teacher..The 66 model (late 65) was the beginning of the Jeep V6 which made several major changes such as tranny, brakes, suspension, some steering, some electrical etc. The members here are very helpful and this site is the most knowledgeable about the Dauntless. The T-86AA that originally came in your year model was produced for two years and was a weak link. Parts for this T-86 are hard to find and that makes them more expensive. Many tranny swaps happened because of this. You say you have an adapter on the front of the transfer case which tells me a non-original tranny had been used on this tranfer case. Because of the many mods made over the years to many jeep, it is very helpful to show pictures.

Assuming that your transfer case has a 4" index bore the easiest transmission installations are:

    1) T86 because it's the 1966 standard. (8" OAL)
    2) T90 internals built into a T86 case because it's the same OAL and bolt pattern as T86 yet it's internally stronger.
    3) T14 because it's only slightly longer than the T86 case.
    4) T15 beacuse its a little longer yet but it still bolts direct to transfer case without rear adapter. (requires special 1-5/8" bellhousing adapter)
    5) T98 /18 is longer OAL yet and requires both bellhousing and transfer case adapter plates.

Personally I would strive for either the T15 or the T18 depending on where you drive .

the T14 would be the easiest to replace . not the strongest transmission but that came behind a V6 . cross member could be found by placing a want ad in classified

The PO on my 66 swapped in a SM420 4 speed in mine behind the dauntless with the same D18 TC. He also twin sticked the TC. The 420 is a sturdy 4 speed used in 1 ton trucks with a granny low. It makes it more like a 3 speed on the street and a little noisy.
