Was up in the mountains for deer season. While "puddling" down hill in 1st gear with the warn in HIGH the T-86 popped out of gear on two separate occasions. Is there something that I should look at? This has never occurred before. Thanx.

Mine did the same. Just pulling out of a friends driveway and jumped out of first. Mine had two broken teeth on the cluster gear. Do a search on here lots of info on the weak T86 first gear.

You can take the top off and look inside. Possibly you'll see the problem, like the broken teeth mentioned above. Almost anything further you do will require the transmission to come out, and be disassembled.

The T-86 is basically an upgraded T-90. The case is different, the splines on the main shaft of the T-86 spiral, and the teeth on the T-86 1st and reverse are beveled. The usual approach is to find a T-90 donor and rebuild the T-86 with T-90 guts. Lots of parts are available for the T-90... the T-86, not so much. None of the internal parts are mixable, so you basically end up with a long-shaft T-90 with a T-86 case. This has been covered a lot in earlier posts.

A good time to consider an upgrade, if you are so inclined. The truck 4-speeds are popular; the Jeep T-15 would be a big step up in strength and durability.

Good stuff thanks. Obviously I did not search. Just posted it quick when I got home.

Is the T-18 a decent trans upgrade for a short wheel base? I may know where to find a ford version. The length I believe is 11.25".

Take a look at Novak (transmission knowledgebase). Good info there on T18.

Been browsing here. Finding good stuff. Need to research more on lengths to see what will be shortest vs. deeper gearing.

Borg Warner Ford version T-18 .........11.87" long plus the adapter.......easily fits in a CJ-5 with a V6 and will end up about and 1" longer over all as compared to what you now have. If your looking for the wide ratio gear box with the 6:32 Low gear the front input shaft gear inside is 17 teeth as observed with the top cover off..........the transmission cover sheet metal with a 1/2"-3/4" body lift is real close if you keep it in the stock location. The shifting stick will have to be bent to clear the dash.

On your T-86 excessive play in the main shaft by either a bearing or a spacer is normally the problem ..............although motor mounts, clutch and or pilot bushing , loose rear mounts or any other mounting bolts may also cause it to jump out of gear.
