I know now there is a special place in hell that is littered with battered Carter YF carcasses.

When I bought my Jeep it had the original YF on it, and the float stuck constantly. I rebuilt it twice, and put a new float and pivot pin in it but it still kept sticking.

The Jeep came with a Holley "replacement" carb, I put it on and it ran well, but the linkage was ***-backward and never worked right.

I bought a used YF, rebuilt It and pit a new float in it and all seemed ok but eventually the float stuck and it caught fire.

Out of desperation I bought a factory rebuilt carb at my FLAPS and it ran beautifully until today when the the float stuck and it caught fire again.

Is this a common issue with the YF or am I just jinxed? I've rebuilt many carbs over the years but I've never had this many issues.

You don't mention ever replacing the needle?

How often do you drive it? Does it sit for long periods where the gas evaporates the bowl empty between fire-ups?

Yes, replaced the needle valve each time they were rebuilt.

It does sit for long times, but the issue is after it has been running for a while, not when trying to start it after sitting.

Can't comment specifically on the YF, however ... I have found that floats hanging up come from misalignment of the tang over the needle with the center axis of the needle. The tang needs to be precisely perpendicular to the long axis of the needle.

There are other options besides a carburetor. My 258 J10 has 2V '85 CJ manifolds and a Motorcraft 2100. It will soon be fuel injected. I made an adapter for a GM 4.3L throttle body from a chunk of aluminum, and built a Megasquirt computer. IIRC USNBill at Binder Planet has adapted a 1V throttle body from a S10 or something - http://www.binderplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?p=285660#post285660 - should work fine if you want to use the original 1V manifold.

I started a thread about my J10 here - http://www.fsjnetwork.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=2468 - unfortunately the project has stalled becasue of other more immediate demands on my time. It shows the adapter I made, and the Megasquirt assembly. IMO if you are resourceful, you should be able to do the entire conversion for well under $500.

I have had fair luck with my little YF. I have rebuilt it about half a dozen times over the last 4 years, but most of those were around the time she was under construction. She has been good the last two years ago or so since running regularly.

It is conceivable yours was built with a flaw. But I am very happy with YF.

Check the float alignment, that it doesn't rub the side of the bowl.

Are you really certain the float is actually sticking?? There can be other causes of flooding.

"the issue is after it has been running for a while." --- Be aware that different float valves are used in different applications, and have differing specs for setting the float height. Jeep has a smaller orifice, and either a spring or a soft tip. These were to reduce flooding on rough terrain. Many kits omit that optional part.

Jeep people also have found an in-line fuel pressure regulator helps reduce flooding. About 3 psi is plenty.

Thanks Tim and Pete, I'll have to check the float again I guess.

I had dreams of building a megasquirt for the flatty at one time, but never got around to it. That's a great idea Tim, but it isn't going to happen any time soon.

Where do you guys get your YF rebuild kits and floats and from?

The biggest problem I had w/ mine was the stubby, strangely shaped float for my 75 wasn't covered in the rebuild kit, so getting it adjusted right so it wouldn't dump gas everywhere was a real challenge. They only seemed to cover the older long, brass floats in two of the kits I've purchased.

Its working now, but I don't trust it and genuinely worry its going to start an engine fire so I'll probably be going TBI as well over the winter. I'm thinking of going w/ a single barrel GM TBI on my 232 though, like the 2.8L had, but w/ either a fuel pressure bump or slightly larger injector.

I'm running this on my YJ 350 TBI and its really great. The self-learning on the fuel table alone is worth twice the asking price IMHO:

Megasquirt is great and all, but its not nearly as sophisticated as the EBL system, and IIRC the prices are similar. You'll spend a lot more time getting lesser results w/ MS.
