was this carb orig to the 75 cj5?
can one still buy them?
if not,
what would be the best one to get?

The Carter 7040 was the original carb for 232/258 in 1975, 49 state.

A popular upgrade is the motorcraft 2100. I have it on mine. I purchased it off Ebay from some guy in Colorado that builds them.

We don't know how good you are at rebuild carbs, so how can anyone really answer this for you?

If you done a carb before, go for it. If not and you are willing to try and possibly fail, go for it.

If you just want to bolt on something that will likely work out of the box, I'd go for a replacement.

The cater YF is about the simplest automotive carb in existence. Do a little research on it and give it a try. They are great carbs for a jeep and going to a different or bigger carb is a waste in my opinion.
