In another thread I was wondering how the heater fan and heater fan switch could both have two leads/terminals. Where was the hot lead then?

    The answer is here:

One of the posts on the fan switch is broken off.

Does that switch look familiar to anyone? Know where I can get a replacement that'll fit?

    TIA,
    Bill

It's just a switch, so finding a work-alike will be easy. Finding one that's the exact size and shape may be more difficult.

Depending on how handy you are with such things, you should be able to take it apart and replace or repair the broken tab. I would try ... worst is that I ruin it completely, but it's already broken...

Maybe drill a little hole through the rivet and solder in a wire with a push-on connector or a bullet connector.

I think that the wiring diagram is in all books aout CJ5. In my opinion there are 2 speed for the heater and this is for low/high. But it is just a souvenir. I did not check.

Thank you, Alan. The only book I have is the Jeep service manual. Unfortunately it doesn't mention the heater. However, I think I can proceed now. Thanks

I have cleaned off the crimped area and soldered a wire in place of trying to put on another lug. There is only a button on the other side so it will take heat pretty good. The trick is to leave the broken piece on the back of the switch as it is a spacer to hold the rivet solid and try to solder the rivet-wire-broken spade at the same time. This will keep the button on the inside in place.

the heater fan switch will have one hot , the other two leads will be one is low speed . the other is high speed . when in low speed position - only two wire will be hot - power and low fan . in high speed position all three will be hot . power and low speed + high speed wires .

For some reason, that last statement does not sound right.wtlw

the power should switch from low to high when you change the selection on the switch.

That switch is awful small to contain a resistor to dissipate full current and not burn out. Now it makes sense that both terminals are hot in high. No resistor needed. "If some is good, more is better."

Since I don't know soldering, I probably have to take that little sucker apart and figure out how to replace that 3rd terminal.

The resistance would not have been in the switch. Instead it would be in series with the low speed wire. There still may be a resistor, even if both wires are energized.
