My gearbox seems out of use, many parts to change : the price at the specialist, including all = I bring my Jeep, they work and they give it back to me with a guarantee - is 1300 euros = many $.

Maybe it could be cheaper to get a rebuilt one in US + transport to France + customs.

For this time, I think I'll pay, but I would like some idea; maybe for a transfer case...

    Thanks for infos.

How much would he charge for the removal and re-installation of the transmission and transfer case?

You would need to know this before you can determine how much he is actually charging for rebuilding the transmission.

Are you planning on replacing the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing while the transmission is detached from the engine block?

Yes, now is a great time to replace the clutch while transmission is out of the Jeep. What if you took the transmission out yourself and took it to them ? That would save you some money, I would think. While out you could check the clutch to see if it needs replacing yourself. Half the fun of owning a Jeep is working on them yourself. ;)

That is crazy expensive. There are people in the UK who would do it for around 400 pounds which is about 460 Euros. If I still had their address I would give it to you. Shop around

For perspective Herm the OD guy would rebuild it for $400 and that is a service so the custom would be low. That is 300 Euros and I bet if you talked to him he could work something out for you. That transmission is very simple to work on, I do remember your situation but there must be plenty of people in France who could do it cheaper. I am positive there will be American soldiers in Germany who can.

Perhaps worthwhile to look for another used transmission or a "parts" jeep in your region.

I agree with the others, that price seems WAY too expensive. I would think that you could ship the tranny to the US and back for half that price!

I agree it is expensive; it is a specialist not far from my house and his shop has been bought by a big Jeep dealer, I learned this when this big dealer sent me the pre-invoice by mail. This Jeep dealer (Indiancars) is near Paris and this shop is near my country house, I know it since 35 years.

A T90 rebuilt in exchange with the old one is 2100 euros at the other specialist, the importer of our friend in Philippines. It is with a sort of guarantee.

I understand for the clutch of course.

Yes I know it is a pleasure to repair oneself, but I am a little bit old for this and I need some more tools. So I become the paying guy.

But is is only for this, because they are 2, this is a pro shop, they work on Jeep old ones all the time, and they sold their activity so it is more expensive than before...

I could find a T90 for cheaper, but with no guarantee, and all the work to put it, heavy, my back is tired, afraid of being hurt, I was sick 2 monthes with these problems so ... I must add that my boys are not very interested in mechanics.

I go back to the shop this evening to discuss with them, and set the things. Afterwards, I'll forget. Or create my own Jeep shop with your help!!!

Too bad the luggage and time would not work... I head for the UK on Saturday - extra week with a T-90 in France would make the wife happy. I tinker with a jeep - she goes shopping and site seeing...

Well - if she went shopping, it probably would not be so cheap after all :D

Herm is selling T-90s with all new gears inside. They use an original case, but everything else is brand new and no poor quality parts either. He also is very good at shipping things, as he does a lot of overseas shipping.

It was the same for me going in England or Holland for business meeting, with madame. Profit was immediately awy in shopping; I can say that I was making shopping too, and it is nice to spend money in London or Amsterdam.

Back to my Jeep : I was at the shop this evening, I met the big boss, he owns a cy in Paris, Jeep dealer. He loves Jeeps and we discusssed business together.

Image the situation: I was coming from Paris, I stop at this shop which is lost in the middle of nowhere, with all these old Jeeps, guns, tanks and we discuss like in a big companies, it was friendly.
I have seen my gearbox open, some water came in and and some parts were broken, other were not in goos shape. I was lucky to arrive there, it could have been broken on the way. They are very good specialistes of old Jeeps and I will develop activities with them. When you love Jeeps.

This is the place, I put more photos in a post about ancesters.

Yes, they know all the parts and are experts. And they like very much what they do. They like Jeeps. They show me what was inside my gearbox and it was not pretty. Water in the oil. It has stayed long with some water inside and rust. So, I'll pay but I had a good contact for future business and this is more profitable.

This is what they have to repair; they need spare parts, difficult to find, and I have a way to get them...

i payed 5 weeks ago for overhaul my t18a and d20 in florida 1600$, but the t18a was realy worn out so also the d20.
everything new inside mine, so if the give everything new, for a shop its ok, its way to much for a privatmechanik.

    No, not Jeepvillage, but jeepvillage is an old cy with all the parts;

It is a subsidiary on Indiancars, in fact an independant shop near Orléans which has been recently bought by Indiancars.

This shop is a place where a friend of mine bought a Willys 35 years ago (I used to drive this Willy in south of France, it is a very good souvenir, and at this period tracks in Provence were opened to Jeeps, now all is forbidden. At this time there was really few people driving 4x4).
The shop is near an ex US army military airport, and the ex-owner was dealing with old Us army cars + french army.

It is in the middle of nowhere.

    So you know Jeepvillage?

I visited JeepVillage a couple of years ago.
    It seems like an old-jeep-paradise.

Yes, they are good and good for spare aprts, big stock.

But I have not for Jeepest, only working on WWII Jeeps (he doesn't want to look at my CJ5!) and lot of old WWII machines.

    It is in Châteaudun. http://www.jeepest.com/

They have 2 places and lot of stock. In the yard, you will be astonished.
The local manager is rich and he does this as a pleasure. He buy old WWII vehicles whatever the price.
And he rebuilds them as it was in 1944... I know his mechanic who does all.

The french army had the Willys under licence (Hotchkiss, M 201) but no Others, no M38 A1.
So you find all for the Willys in stock, but nothing for the CJ5, or expensive.
