    Hey all--

I have a 1960 Willys, and I recently filled up the trans with fresh fluid. I pulled the fill plugs first (an upper one nearer the shifter, and another lower one facing out towards the side of the car) and stuck my finger in, and couldn't feel any oil! So I opened the drain plug at the bottom (and a lot of oil came out, relatively clean too) and so I plugged it back up, filled the lower first, and then filled the upper, to just so a drop of oil leaked out from the fill hole per the manual. (I have the OEM manual)

everything seemed fine, until I parked it and came out to a massive puddle of oil! I immediately checked the drain and fill plugs, but they hadn't leaked a drop. It seemed to be coming from the area where the E-brake drum on the driveshaft meets the trans. I tried looking in the manual for a picture but its unclear -- is there a generic O ring here, or some kind of special seal? Or something else entirely? Did I just do something wrong?

    any help would be appreciated

    thanks!

Output shaft seal or leaking from the splines in the yoke.

One of these seals along with a new felt ring should fix the leak (part# 18670.04 superseded 8123077, but both work)

My tranny and xfer case are pretty leaky as well! An inevitable future project will be pulling trans, fixing the popping out 2nd gear and re sealing everything...!

My fear is the issue of what fluid to put IN it! That is another whole long and detailed thread....

Is there some sort of debate over whats best to put in it? I put 80-90W gear oil like the manual specified.

There's always room for debate. Conventional, synthetic, what weight, etc., etc. The book says 80-90 and that's what most of us use. I suggest using it unless you want to spend money on synthetics that are likely going to end up on the driveway anyway. Just go with the recommended fluid.
