Hi. I am new to this group. I have owned a 1968 Kaiser Jeep CJ5 since it was new! It has the original Dauntless V-6 Buick engine in it and it runs strong. It has been sitting in a carport in Tucson, AZ for at least 15 years, but my 38 year old daughter, who has fond (and sometimes frightening) memories of time she spent in that Jeep, wants to restore it. We are currently dealing with an overheating problem, which seems to focus on a 1/4 inch hole on the passenger side of the timing chain cover. We are hoping for no cross-contamination, i.e. water to oil. I am told by a local, reputable Jeep repair company that this is not an uncommon problem. We are going to attempt to weld the hole, but we'll see how that goes.

We are anxiously seeking a full roll cage, or a roll bar at the least, for this vehicle. Does anyone out there have any leads for us? I have this really strong desire to acquire this by Xmas!!

Any help or advice you can give me to get this guy back on the road would be gratefully accepted. Thanks. Linda

Not sure if your question about the hole in the timing cover was answered. The timing chains in these V6's are notorious for stretching, the original nylon gears wearing, and the spring loaded tensioners wearing. When the chain gets loose enough, it starts slapping the inside of the cover, and will eventually wear a hole from the inside out. I've seen these hole welded, epoxied, and JB welded, all with success, after of course the timing set is replaced. HTH!

    'Morning from W. MI.

You might also check around for a local fabricator who could make you a custom rollcage. My CJ6 is currently having this done...and the route I went isn't cheap but I'm having TJ shoulder belts added all round, etc.

Unless I'm mistaken you can still buy these timing covers new. If I had it to do over again...(from back when I had my engine out), I'd have done this.

    Lynn,
Those sport bars are ridiculously expensive. $500 bucks for the front only? Why does that not sit well with me? Am I missing something? Talk aboutmaking a case to fab your own parts.

I don't like the segmented look that much either. Looks like quality work, BUT, seems like it would be significantly cheaper to find a local fabricator like Boyink's: http://www.jcroffroad.com/SWBcages.htm

While we are on the subject, does this cage on my parts jeep look like custom work or an older pre-fab unit?

Nope, it is where he is getting his cage installed right now. Sorry for the confusion.

Guys I agree that the link I provoided is expensive. I don't know anything about them, I just tossed it out here to show that there is a bolt-in option.
I agree that a front hoop welded to a factory style roll bar is the most cost effective way to go. (Front hoops available from 4wd.com or similar places) A custom built cage is probably the safest way to go but may be hard to find a builder in some areas.

If you have a local race track there's likely someone nearby that builds cages as well.

    Food for thought.
