I have been having problems with sputtering and dying. I recently put a new fuel pump in, cleaned out my fuel lines, replaced the in line fuel filter, pulled and treated the fuel tank.
Should I buy a new Solex Carb. Or rebuild my Carter???

Have you actually performed a fuel pressure and volume test?
Have you checked the ignition system like points? Dwell? Ignition timing?

I did replace the dist. cap, points, rotor, condensor, wires, plugs ignition coil. I have not done a pressure test or volume test. It seems to run ok for afew miles, then it starts to sputter and die. She will resart after i have waited a minute or two, but with the same result.

'Solex or rebuilt Carter' has been discussed here many, many, times - try searching.

Consensus seems to be Carter is fine IF properly rebuilt. This means using the right kit with the correct float valve. And the throttle shaft will need re-bushing if it is loose.

Personally I see no reason to buy a Solex, and some reasons not to...

Your symptoms could simply be crud in the float valve, float adjustment, or similar. Pull the top off the carb and take a look. A fuel pressure regulator set at 3psi may help.

It was sputtering before and after the new pump, she runs better, but for a short while, with same result. Well I thought the filter was correct. Which way should it go??

You may have crud floating around in the tank that is being sucked down to block off the intake tube.

Most filters have an arrow embossed on/in them showing direction of flow.

What manufacture of filter are you using? I seem to remember (I'm old, so may be wrong) that maybe the Emco brand would fall apart and the filter material would block the flow and/or get into the fuel bowl and block the inlet to the carb. Could have been another brand with a similar name.

Had the same symptoms on a CJ5 F134. It was the vent in the gas cap. Check it.

Roundfender, thank you I did replace the cap with a new one after I pulled the tank. ( When it would die on me, I would pull the cap off to see if there was a vacum. I replaced that almost right away.)

I am using a Fram in line fuel filter. I have it place between my tank and fuel pump along the frame rail.

Could also be an ignition coil going bad. They heat up and you get no spark, then after they cool down for a few minutes the engine will fire again.

@ Posimoto, I have recently replaced ( 2 weeks ago ) Dist. cap, my rotor, points, condensor, plugs, all wire's, and the Ignition coil. Spark seems strong.

If you have any rubber fuel line you may want to check that. Sometimes it will look fine on the outside but will collapse on the inside if there is suction from the pump. It will run for a while, then die, then after it sits for a bit it will allow you to restart it.
