I am currently putting my Jeep back together after a year and a half scattered in my garage. I did put in new clutch, fork and TO bearing. I am now hooking up the linkage and pedals. the clutch pressure feels good when I press the pedal down. The thing is that with clutch pushed in and trans in gear, the jeep won't roll as if the clutch has not engaged and freed the trans. I read many old posts regarding clutch issues, my question is that I have not fired the engine up yet ( still need to wire it up) am I premature in worrying about this? Do I need to adjust the best i can and get the flywheel going before I can adjust the clutch correctly? Or do I need to be concerned and think about other fixes? Thanks

Starting and running or not, has no affect on the clutch. I'd get it working right before I did anything else...

:)How much Free Play to you have at the top of the pedal travel?? Meaning when the clutch pedal is at rest how much travel down do you have till you feel resistance?
If it is over an Inch then you probably need to lengthen the mechanical length of the linkage. Perhaps the clutch fork is not moving far enough to fully release the clutch disc to release the drivetrain. Extend the travel and see if that helps.............Of course you still want to maintain about 3/4" of free play.
I have heard of clutch disc's getting frozen / rusted to the pressure plate or flywheel if not used for a period of time but that is a stretch.
You say you installed it recently? Did that go together OK and did you use the same length throwout bearing? and the same clutch fork?

Even properly adjusted, sometimes a new friction disk will drag until it gets broken in. Possibly that could be enough to make the Jeep seem hard to roll by hand.

after reading through the threads I wish I did more research before I purchased new fork and bearing. I just went with what was sold to me as what I needed, now I'm thinking about that. Tarry, free play is not the issue so I know its not that and I had flywheel turned before installation so dont think rust is issue. I hope Pete is right but don't know, just want to get it right before i continue with build

Did you remember to release the emergency brake? That can freeze into position, also.

Check the replacement clutch release arm (fork). I had a brand new one for a stock V-6 that I had to clearance so the release bearing would move/travel properly. It acted like the arm was moving fully but the bearing would bind on the arm and not allow the clutch to release fully.

    VanJeep,

:)You need about .400-.600 of an inch of travel at the throwout bearing to release a standard pressure plate.......I say at the throwout bearing which means in a standard Clutch fork that has a standard 2:1 ratio means that at the fork end tip where your linkage attaches that has to move about .800-1.200 of an inch to get full travel .............something to look at.

This may sound way to simple, but I had the clevis pin in the wrong hole on the clutch pedal when I put mine back. Had it in the bottom hole and everything felt fine, just wasn't getting enough throw, and wouldn't release the clutch enough to get it in gear. Moved it up to the top hole and it worked perfect. Sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees.

Nice! Sometimes we just need to stop, get out our thinkin' stool, and study for awhile because the obvious is way too easy. I like your color too.
