Anyone have any input on how the Saginaw steering box bolts up to a flatfender frame?

I've got a manual box out of a late CJ, complete with the crappy stamped sheetmetal mount. Then, I ordered up a mount from BigDaddyOffroad but it just seems to be a substantially beefier version of the stock late-model mount. I just can't see how it will bolt up to my early frame, it looks like it will put the box at about a 15* angle to the frame rails.

    Am I missing something?

How have you guys mounted your boxes to the frame? I'm thinking about trying to return the BDOR mount, and just modifying the stock plate to bolt onto the frame rail after boxing it, and then adding a 'winch plate' type support to tie the two frame horns together for strength.

    Idears guys?

The mount you got and the sheetmetal mount is for use with the origial "later" crossmember the jeeps used. it bolts 2 places on top of crossmember and then to bottom of frame rail. You can either make a crossemember or get an easly 70'2 mount i belive it bolts to the frame rail. I have the later crossmember grafted onto my frame which was actually pretty easy, so maybe you can find a rusted out frame that somebody is tossing and cut off the crossmember and put it in the flatty

The best mount to use for a saginaw conversion is the mount that was used on a 69-70 jeepster. this mounts to the frame rail with 4 bolts and accepts either a 4 bolt power box or a 3 bolt manual box. I've never seen this mount mentioned on this forum. I just discovered this after seeing a weird looking mount on an old jeep. I asked the owner where that mount came from and he told me a jeepster. It's a sweet peice and works perfectly on the narrower, shorter frame rails of an old cj. the jeepster had the same dimension frame rail as the early cj's. it's a factory built bracket and works better than anything advanced adapters (or anyone else) sells. Here's one that just went on ebay with some pics.

true, the Jeepster bracket will work
but they are difficult to find (like hens teeth, and pricey when found)
my mount is a flat piece of plate, with pipe spacers
I had to clear a winch mount, so I had to build mine
if you don't have anything else in the way, the Jeepster mount will work
    for any CJ

Thanks guys, you confirmed what I was thinking. I now have two of the later-style mounts and have just spent the past week thinking I was losing (the rest of) my mind. Either one of the brackets I have now will put the box out at an odd angle, and look really funky even if I can make one of them work.

At this point, if I can't scare up a Jeepster mount, then methinks I'm going to follow Jim's lead and just fab one up out of flat plate and pipe spacers.

Thanks for the input guys!

That actually looks like a Wrangler box mount. The late Wagoneers didn't have a removable mount. The box mounted directly to the frame as the frame was modified in that area. The earlier Wagoneers did use a removable mount that works pretty well for Saginaw conversions. Do a search. Mcruff has a design that looks very good and he and some others have used with good success and I'm going to try it for a couple of projects also. His design is more compact than the Wagoneer mount. He has the design on here and you can't print it off. It has all the dimensions, etc. right on it. Nickmil.

I weld all of mine to the frame - have made my own in the past, but used a AA one on the most recent (Black '46) due to time issues. I also have an example of how NOT to do one that the PO did on the Red '51. It's slated to be changed in the next month or so.

I was thinking full size wagoneer. Did you take that off of an XJ Wagoneer? The little Cherokee style?

I fab'd up my own out of 3/8 inch plate. Unless I'm mistaken, you'll have to mount the box at an angle no matter which mount you use. That is, unless you use a two piece steering shaft. The angle from the fire wall down to the box requires a steep angle. I've never seen a CJ with the box mounted parrallel unless it had a two piece steering shaft.

I used the original staped sheet metal bracket with a homemade steering box brace. So far, it has held up to 36's on Humvee beadlocks, Waggy Dana 44, and a spool. The bell coupler blew at the input shaft, but so far the mount has held up fine.

As a side note, don't buy one of those steering box braces that clamp just above the sector shaft and brace to the opposite frame rail. Instead, use the connecting rod off a V8 engine (not sure how many different ones will work, but I used one from a 340 Mopar). Worked PERFECT and didn't cost me a thing.

If you need pics, let me know.
