I just rebuilt my engine, all is running good but now the starter is grinding now and then, doesn't do it all the time. it is the same starter that has been on the jeep for 8+ years. no problems until now.......what did I do wrong when I put it all back together?

you could have the starter drive ratcheted all the way out where it locks you need to take the starter off and unlock it there is a video on youtube under" starter drive repair" it will answer your questions. i just went thru it good luck

Did you replace the ring gear? First thing I would check is the starter bendix. If the starter was lying around for an extended period, it may have gotten rusted up some and/or dirty and the bendix is not fully extending. Pull the starter and bench test it (or floor test it as I usually doR)). While it's out get a light and rotate the engine and check the teeth on the ring gear. If some of them did get burred up, you can use a Dremel tool or something similar to clean them up.

I would not keep using the Jeep until you get this resolved or you will likely be pulling the motor again to replace the ring gear.

Well I got to bench/floor test a few days ago and it was the bendix, since there isn't anyone around here that rebuilds motors here now (that i'm aware of) So went the route of the Toyota Land Cruiser starter. I know there has been several write ups on this......But it DOES work and work well. Auto Zone part number 16224 $49.99, the Fhead starter is $159.99. I had to open up the holes on the starter for the 1/2" bolt to go thru. The top bolt is a bear to get to so I used an allen head bolt on the top. Then I could use an extension and allen head socket to tighten it up. I still have to tape off the extra green wire that you don't use. Once again this site saved me over a 100 bucks. Thanks a bunch guys!!!!!

here is a couple pic's of the new starter

I'm gonna change my top bolt to an Allen head, that's a good idea, the top one is a bear to get a wrench on.

I tried the Toyota starter on my 1959 cj5 this weekend and after I made the holes in the starter larger had no problem except for the top bolt being inaccessible. My solution was to use a piece of all thread rod, and three nuts. One nut was the stopping point for the portion of the all thread that would go into the starter holes. I welded the nut in place and ground the edges of it off, so that the corners of the bolt would not touch the solenoid (it was too tight). Then I used two more nuts at the end of the all thread and tightened them against each other, to put my socket wrench on the end nut and screw the whole thing into the hole. I could have welded one nut to the all thread instead of double nutting, but I felt like two back to back nuts would hold up better than my weld. Everything works!

My started siezed after 3 years of sitting. I'm going to do this toyota started replacement instead of having the original rebuilt. Thanks guys! No issues with this working right?

No I have had no issues with it, It's a good swap.

It's probably cheaper buying the toyota starter than having the original rebuilt.

IMHO the original starter will be worth more today and forever.

And just because it is "seized" from sitting doesn't mean it needs a rebuild. More likely just a drop of oil.

There is nothing magical about the old starter motors. Take it apart, clean and reassemble. Unless it was sitting in a bucket of salt water, it's probably saveable. Even if you have to put brushes and bushings in it, you are only at about 10 dollars.

Want an adventure sometime? Try pulling the starter from a '66 Ford 428. You have to find every extension in the county to reach from the top bolt out past the front bumper because there is no room any where in the engine bay to swing your ratchet enough to unthread it. I lucked out and had 5 feet of extensions for some reason or another, plus a son that was big enough, (and small enough to fit under the car) to hold the socket in place so I could get to the ratchet and turn it without the silly thing all coming undone until the bolt was out.

It's easier to me to swap the starters. If it's that easy to just rebuild, however, I will try that before I swap a new part in. My jeep is mostly original to my knowledge and could be easy and save me a bunch of money.
