What is wrong?

I am new to Jeeps, especially CJ5s. I just bought a 1969 cj5 with the dauntless v6. It is mated to a t90 trans. My transmission floor cover will not fit because the holes do not line up. Also, my torque mount on the side of the transfer case is about 2 inches forward of where it should be. What is wrong or missing here? It is a factory v6 so the engine mounts are not the issue. Please help.

    A '69 with a V6 didn't come with a T90 trans so something's not original.

I am sure the transmission is not original but I cannot find anyone else who has had this problem. I have taken pictures of it but cannot upload them here from my tablet.

on the t-86 there was plate that jogged the crossmember a couple inches. when they swapped it out they probrobly got rid of that bracket and got it bolted on wherever it landed.

I can move the crossmember that is not that big of an issue, however, my clutch rod is in a bind because the transmission is too far forward and my floor cover will not bolt in because the shifters are too far forward also.

Is there an adapter between the bell housing and trans? If so how thick is it?

There is not. The bellhousing is bolted directly to the trans. I assumed that there needed to be an adapter there but I do not have one.

    That's the roughly 2" you're missing. The '69 would've had a T14 with an adapter.

That must be the problem. I need one to put it back together right. Do you know where I can find one or how I would go about describing what exactly it is that I need?

What is wrong? Lots is wrong.. They took a standard T-90A1 or T-90C which has a 7" input shaft stick-out and re-drilled the bell-housing which they then bolted the tranny to the bell from the inside of the bell. You will also find the drive shafts will not work unless they had them modified. One shaft (front) will be +/- 2-5/8" too long and the rear shaft will be 2-5/8" too short. The proper original adapter for the 225V6 is 2-5/8" in depth. That is probably the same amount you need to line up your brake/clutch shaft. The transfer torque mount is also mis-aligned this same amount.

To fix this you have some work to do. Are you ready for this?

I am ready, I want it to be right, look right and run right. Can you lead me in the right direction on where to find a, preferably used, adapter or the correct trans that will bolt up correctly?

Post a want to buy add on this forum for the 225V6 adapter or search elsewhere. You may find a T-86AA tranny which is what was supposed to be there but they are far and few between and parts are very hard to find and expensive. The T-90 will have to be modified too. There are some members on here that may chime in that will have all or most of the conversion pieces you will need. How do you intend on using this jeep.? Daily driver or mudder or rough trail or just moderate wheeling and hiway. This will make a diff on what tranny you might be considering.

Like I posted earlier, your jeep had a T14 trans from the factory given it's a 1969 with a factory V6. It also would have had a single stick, large hole, 1-1/4" shaft, transfer case; so most likely the transfer case was swapped also. The T86 was only in the early (66-67) V6 jeeps. Do some reading here: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t14.htm

    I have a '70 CJ5, with a stock V6 and a T90 swapped in place of the original T14.
Walt Couch hit the nail on the head-you need the long input shaft T90, with the adapter plate,
then everything will (more or less) line up for you. I've never seen one bolted directly up like that-
I didn't even think that was possible!

If you could see some of the work that has been done to this jeep you would understand how it was done. I will mainly be using this jeep as a daily driver with the occasional offroad hunting trip mixed in. I wont be doing any rock crawling or mudding.

I have read that if the transmission originally was mated to a 4 cyl, then it was the short input shaft, but the 6 was a longer input shaft. Did I read that right? And if so should I only need the adapter?
