    Spline count Geoffrey.

The stock axle shafts have a 19(?) spline count I think.

If you wanna keep it period, get a Powr-lok, or a Herm full float kit, I think with Herm's kit you can run 30 spline shafts.

Stock will be a 10 or probably a 19. Right now, I believe the only way to get a 30 spline in one of these is with a FF kit from Herm. Warn does not sell theirs any longer (one of the sets I have).

I'm banking on it being a 19 spline. I wouldn't want a full spool unless it lives most of it's life in the dirt.

I can't think of a single reason to want a full spool at all.
Last time wheeling I was having trouble making turns on the narrow trails with a powrlock rear and open front.
Wish I had an Ox locker.

Try to remember it, or you could waste a lot money.

You probably should count the splines to be sure before you go looking.
Maybe post a wanted add here on the forum once you know the count.

thats a spool, only good for drag racing. its like welding up your spider gears, which a lot of people do to get a lincoln locker. thats a sure fire way of breaking a axle. look for a lock-right, believe thats the only locker your going to find for one of the old jeeps, thats what i have. a found a powerlok for the front of my jeep on the willys tech site, new in the box, there a posi but havent been made for many many years, can figure how happy i was to find a new one in the box. anyway the powerloc, if you can find one, or the lock-right is the only option offered for the old 10 or 19 spline axles. also have to remember you have a t90 trans, that will be the weak link after putting a locker in the rear. check out the willys tech site for a lockright or powerloc.

If stock, I think you should have the 19 spline axles. I too think it would be a big mistake to spool it if you actually like driving it, not to mention going through rear tires and a lot of extra stress and wear on the rest of the drive train. I don't even like the auto lockers in a short Jeep, but I do happen to know where one of those is still sitting on the bench.

Actually that's a mini-spool not a full spool. Probably not the best choice for the trails you have to run back East, but I prefer a spool to an auto locker. Detroit makes an 19 spline by the way. I'd never go back to an auto locker. The spool is much more friendly around town that any of the autos. Other than a little tire chirping on tight turns, you'd never know it's there. I just don't make tight turns on asphalt if I can help it. Selectable locker is the best way to go, but they are all very pricey. I've had a Lock Right and a Detroit in the rear axle and I can honestly say I prefer the spool. I don't believe the constant pressure on the rear axle shafts with a spool is anywhere near as destructive as the unloading impact of an auto locker and you don't get the sudden lane changes you can get with the auto lockers. I did a quick search on Summit Racing's site an didn't find any spools or mini spools for a 19 spline axle. So I guess it doesn't really matter, unless you are willing to upgrade to 30 splined axles. For an economical locker that pretty much leaves you with a lunchbox locker like the Lock Right, although there are cheaper brands out there. Good luck.

Sand, snow and mud, i figured a locker would be nice to keep all the wheels turning

I've had no complaints with my Powr-lok.

That being said, I don't expose my Jeep to snow, or mud, so I can't really give advice there.
With rocks and sand, I love it. Friends with newer Jeeps thought I had a spooled rear until hit the hard stuff (for a stock CJ.)

    I think you'd do good with a Track-lock or a Powr-lok.

    Just an opinion.

Winter highway driving with a rear auto locker can be a harrowing experience in a SWB Jeep. Not sure if you intend to do that or not, just wanted to chime in on that.

:iagree: Offroad in the snow with a locker is fine, on-road isn't really do-able. Even a limited slip in the snow is sketchy for onroad driving. IMHO

Even in my Ram on slick roads is an experience, defiantly have to know your vehicle and how it acts. It will go but usually it's sideways lol
