i have a 1974 CJ5 304 V8 with a T15 3-speed and Dana 20 Transfer Case. I was going to mount a twin stick shift kit and when I really started to look at it, I noticed a couple of things I was hoping someone here could help me with...............

    * The shifter rod entrances on the case are at the same level. My workshop manual/parts manual shows one picture that matches what I have and one picture where the shift rod oil seals/case are different...looks like one extends about 1-inch further out than the other.

    * The shift linkage does not seem to match the shift rods. One rod looks OK, but the other one (on the left in the picture) is mounted to the side of the rod instead of in the slot.

I am wondering if this is a replacement transfer case (or different linkage) and if so, what is it off of?? What year??

Just from the one pict it looks like a normal D20 with the shift linkage installed incorrectly by someone.

    Looks like a Wagoneer/Pu or possibly a Jeepster/Commando 20. The
'72-'79 CJ 20 use different shift rails and as noted the shift rail bosses are offset from each other.

I'm talking more about the innards here, but is the Dana 20 for the T15 (71-75) the only ones with a factory machined recess to fit over the reverse idler shaft and countershaft at the rear of the transmission?

One could machine a different d20 to mate to the T15, but you might could tell if the machining was factory. Maybe?

Here is a picture of a d20 with the recess at the bottom of the transmission mounting surface

OleBlue... The TC in your picture looks just like mine (shifter rods are even)
. Is this out of your 73 CJ5??

It's not mine, but it is identical to my 73 except for the shift rail ends. I notice those in that picture have slots. Mine have holes. I don't have a picture of mine at the moment.

Versions used on other transmissions also had recesses like T-14's.
the shift rails and front housing in Oleblues pictures are not correct for a '72-'79 CJ.
I have the correct shift rails sitting on my workbench right now. Will take pics tomorrow and attempt to post pics (having computer issues).

I revised my post. I was studying for the recess instead of the rails. My rails have holes and not slots/bolts.
