I found a PTO PT1J and Ramsey winch for sale locally and wondered if anyone can help me place a value on these. They appear to work and the owner is asking 650.
    thanks

For what it's gonna take to restore one, if any parts are missing, I'd walk away.

For that $, you should be able to find a really decent bolt-on 8274 and have a whole lot less of a hassle mounting it. About $400 too high.

    Dissenting Opinion Time.

$650 for the two pieces if they're in reasonable shape is about what they normally go for, especially good if you aren't paying shipping to get them. If I was in your position I'd pick them up in a heartbeat.

If they do need restoring, assuming no broken stuff, it'll knock you back about $70 - $100 bucks foe new bearings & seal, that will make them like new.

As for PTO vs. electric- I don't argue Religion on here- see my web page for that :)

worked with pto winches in army , the plus side of them is you can pick the winch speed with transmission . but no way can I tell you what they are worth

Once again I'm with the "old" guys. I'd walk over a pile of electric winches to get to a PTO winch. They will pull all day long and I have used them on Jeeps that way, in construction. And in a pinch they can pull hard enough rip the Jeep in half.

I rarely see a complete set-up under $500 if it's in good condition. Anything under that I'd grab as an investment. But maybe prices are dropping as folks forget the old ways.

If it's complete and there's no serious problems, I'd jump on it. That's a twin stick, twin shaft PTO and they're impossible to find. Some clown in north Florida wanted $850 just for a single stick, twin shaft PTO on CL recently. I much prefer a PTO driven winch, I think they beat electric winches hands down! My jeep came with a rear PTO and I recently bought a PTO winch so I'm looking for a twin stick, twin shaft PTO if anyone has one for sale for a reasonable price.

In your case I guess it just depends on whether you want a PTO winch or electric. Electric is cheaper and easier to install but severely limited by the capacity of your battery, overheating of the motor*, etc. A PTO winch will pull all day long without breaking a sweat and has far more power than all but the biggest electrics. Most electrics are rated at about 8000 pounds but that's right on the edge of destruction (their stock 5/16" wire rope WILL break at ~8600 pounds). My M-37 PTO winch is rated for 7500 pounds but it has over a 4x safety factor.

*Take a look at the duty cycle rating of your electric winch. Most are only rated at 10%. That means you can only pull for ONE minute and then you need to let it cool for ten minutes. There's no duty cycle limit on a PTO winch since it has no electric motor.

    Actually I think stick #2 is a shadow :(

But yeah, twin sticks typically go for about $650 by themselves.

Studying the picture I'd say you're right about the shadow.

The military Ramsey 50/50R and 105 PTO setup for the M38 & M38A1 sells for well over $2000. $650 is reasonable if those units are serviceable or rebuildable.
