Hi I have a question for all you V-6 owners. Are you guys running stock exhaust(that is if its duel glasspacks running out before the rear fender????) Or what is the stock exhaust setup. Is there anywhere where I can buy a replacement quieter exhaust setup. Is the duel glasspack the stock exhaust? Thanks for any answers. I would prefer to be able to pick the parts out of a catalog rather than fabricate them. :D

Glasspacks?? Is that a fancy name for "mufflers"? If so, I run the dual setup.

While on the topic, I'd like to know if the heat riser is intended for the dual set up or for the crossover tube? Anyone know/speculate?

I think glasspacks are a funky term for the round large tube that I guess is a muffler. Not sure though. Im not sure if this setup was stock. Oh and one more did the stock setup have a crossover pipe to balance the pressure between the two pipes?

Glasspacks are just fiberglass packed bullet shaped mufflers.

MOP has plenty of experience with the heat riser Alan.

66Tux, you might try searching the forum. We discuss V6 exhausts here frequently, it'll be a lot of info to sort through but you might find what you're looking for.

Yes I tried doing a search but couldnt really find exact answers to the questions I asked. I want to know is the stock exhaust the one I have, and if I can directly replace it with a kit from a certain manufacture?

Stock exhaust size was discussed I know recently.

    Don't know about replacements though.

The stock exhaust setup involves a crossover or y-pipe that runs just ahead of the transmission skid plate (if you have one). A single pipe then runs along the driver side, over the rear axle and then, depending on the model year, exits the left or right rear after the muffler. Correction; There may be one factory setup that had the muffler before the axle bend. Glass packs as you called them were not stock. There's a good diagram of the exhaust setup in the FSM (Factory Service Manual). Unfortunately, no one makes a stock replacement exhaust system for our V6 CJs, at least none that I've been able to locate. Please let us all know if you find one. I think most of the members here just take their rigs to a local muffler shop and have them install a custom system. Hope this helps.

I bought a stainless set - including the elusive Y pipe - from Kepich Muffler in FLA. I don't have a phone no. for you but they advertise in Hemmings Motor news. It's pricey but you will never have to rplace it again. AM

I think it would be hard to to compete with the price of a muffler shop, when you consider what they would charge for a complete exhaust system designed for V6 CJ's with shipping, etc. The stock tubing for dauntless v6 = 2.00 inches with a .065 inch wall thickness. Many on this board have got manifold-back systems installed for less than $200. Guess if you have a selection of shops and shop around it could be possible.

My system is as described by beeser. Y-pipe to skid plate, single pipe on driver side over the rear axle then muffler angled out towards passenger rear at ~45.

Alan, the heat riser should not depend on what comes after it. The coil (~thermostat) causes the valve to open when warm. I don't think it cares whether the exhaust goes out one pipe or two.

OK. I've had "Cherrybomb" mufflers, which fit that description. Those the same?

A cherry bomb is a type of glass pack. They were very popular in the late 70s and early 80s. they are still a good way to get a free flowing exhaust if that fits your application. Great for horsepower, not so good for torque to to lack of back pressure in some applications. They come in a wide array of lengths. They are torpedo shaped tubes .You simply weld the inlet pipe to one end and exit pipe to the other. If you look in a summit catalog you will find them. They are not a bad exhaust and very economical, they have a limited life span before the fiberglass inside deteorates completely and sound like garbage. If it helps, I didnt like the sound of them on my dauntless either.

The original Cherrybomb was a glass pack, bullet style muffler, yes.
