This weekend me and my dad tore down the engine to replace the valve stem seals on the '62 cj. We are trying to find the cause of all the oil burning. We found that the old seals were hard as a rock and shattered getting them off. This should stop most of it...

all back together and cleaned up, we also adjusted the rocked arms before fininshing up.

Hopefully this stops the massive amounts of oil being burned!

That sounds like a worthwhile project.....is that a special valve spring compressor? I have a big old C-clamp type that is meant to be used when the head is off....

Yes, Its specificlly made for doing valve jobs with the head still on, it's from Cal'van tools. We also pressurized the inside of the head to keep the valve up while the spring was off.

Thanks for that! I was going to ask about the possibility of the valve falling down....now that you mention it I think a friend and I did the same thing on a TR-4 (Triumph) engine a long time ago....

My old F-head was burning oil (about a quart every 10 miles). I pulled the head and had a local shop do new guides and modified it to take modern umbrella seals. The engine still burned a ton of oil. Compression check was good, so it must have been the exhaust valve guides. I got frustrated and swapped in a v6. lol
