    I have a 68 cj5 with a add on telt steering column
I do not know what make or model its from

here is my question I have had the jeep for of a year know driving around town everything has been fine. I took it offroading for the forst time last weekend and on uphill climbs and not long climbs eather i would lose the steering just before the top then it would come back. It did this about 3 time all up hill.

I am not sure where to even start looking.

The only thing i see that might do it is a bell looking thing between the rod on the steering box and column I pulled on it trying to get it to come lose and nothing

help me out i am feeling stupid right know =)

What they said. Sounds like a binding issue but not knowing what you have makes it impossible to accurately help.

I dont know if this will help but

there is an S in a box on top of what i would call the gear box

this is clearly a hack in job because they have cut the cross member to get the steering box in ( what i would call a gear box anyways)

You need to have your pics on a photo sharing site like photobucket. Then, copy & paste the link here.

Steering wheel lock is the only thing I can think of. Are you using the key in the column?

It looks to me like you have a manual saginaw steering conversion.

If the steering wheel feel temporarily disconnected (as you say free spins) then my guess is that one of the splined shaft connections is being pulled out of engagement when you pull on the steering wheel to hang on going up a steep incline.
Can you feel in and out movement of the steering column if you pull up on the steering wheel? (Do this while parked!!).

I have seen some steering column swaps done poorly that pay little attention to anchoring the steering column to the dash or floor structure. The sheet metal dash of a stock Jeep offers little rigidity for an anchor point. The lower end of the steering column should be anchored solidly to the floor structure if there are no braces to the dash anchor point.

The steering column MUST be solidly mounted. If yours is not, then FIX IT while you are still alive.

Check the fitting in pics 7 and 8. I have seen them become a problem where they would free spin.

Your issue of it being on a climb may indicate a movment at the bottom of the Saginaw box where the movment from the suspension is pulling the shaft at the bottom of the box down allowing it to disengage. Check the bottom where the pitman hooks and the shaft as the other fitting above attaches to the box.

You may do yourself a favor and hang the front off the ground by the frame to cycle the suspension and see what chnages.

Try wedging the wheels against a curb and attempt to force the steering while someone watches to see what moves and what doesn't?
