I have a 67 CJ5 that has trouble starting sometimes. So here is what I do... I generally pull the choke out 3/4 and pump gas twice. 1/3 of the time it starts fine. Otherwise it won't start at all. If it doesn't start, I pull off the air filter and push the flap down on the top of the carb and squirt gas in and it will start every time. My uncle seems to think its a fuel filter. I am thinking there is a carb issue. Any ideas?

well, changing out fuel filter couldn't hurt anything. My old chevy truck did what you were saying because I ran the tank down and it sucked up some junk in the filter, replaced filter and started fine.

I would start simple replace fuel filter there cheap. by the way what engine is this? Do you remember when the fuel filter was last changed?

Thanks, I'll try the fuel filter. I just got the Jeep off craigslist a couple months ago and didn't get much information. It does have a 225 Dauntless. It sounds great when it starts!

Okay, I have changed the fuel filters, checked the fuel pump -it worked good - and rebuilt the carb. Now it seems to want to start but can't quite get there. And it'll backfire now which I believe is new. I checked the timing and it is around 8 which I was told isn't enough. To prevent starting. Is there anything else I'm missing. Thanks for the help.

Try pulling the choke all the way out. You want the flap closed on cold start.

So you have the 225 O.F.
Do you have the Rochester 2g carb and stock Delco distributor? If so then your initial timing would be 5* BTDC. If 2g carb then be sure the accelerator pump action is working properly. Should be squirting two healthy streams of gas down into the carb when you full throttle the control.

Tried full choke. Nothing. Have delco distributor and 2g carb. Good fuel streams into carb. I also changed out spark plugs and had mechanic double check carb rebuild for measurements.

You have to have a good 12V from the "R" terminal on the starter solenoid going to the "+" terminal on the coil. You really need a volt meter for this measurement as it is checked while the starter is cranking the engine.

Thanks for the advice. Found I needed a new battery. Put one in and it did backfire and blew the bottom gasket of my carb. Put a new one on and will be working toward timing issues - distributor, timing gear possibly?

I had a similar issue with my 225/2G. For some reason the gas would disappear from the carb float bowl occasionally. Pouring gas into the carb would get it to start. I had to pull the screws off the carb and lift the top up enough to look into the float bowl to discover that it was happening. I never did figure out where the gas went and it quit doing it so I quit thinking about it.
