I am starting on repairing the rear of my fiberglass tub and I need to replace the original 74/75 filler neck the P.O. used as its rusted badly. I have read that there is a way to use the 76+ one by cutting 2 tubes off and using the opening left for one tube. Can someone here elaborate on the details of this mod. If someone has any pics of this, I would appreciate for it. I want to have my filler neck choice in hand when I do the work on the rear so I don't have to come back and change anything later.

    Thanks

    Bob

I have not done this, but I recall that Mike Boyink has http://boyink.com/cj6/gas-tank-installing-rear/ - but he also used the later style tank, with a filler hose size that matches the filler neck.

The main part of the original setup that is NLA is the filler neck, that sticks through the body panel. And the bulkhead fitting in the larger tube. If it were at all salvageable, I'd try to fix it. Bead blast, weld up any holes, plate or coat or?

I had seen Mikes blog but there wasn't really much detail on the filler. I had thought about using a YJ 15 gallon tank, modified skid, and filler but I haven't found any info on anyone doing that either. It would be nice to have the filler on the drivers side like my other vehicles.

The existing filler neck is brittle and crumbling so I don't think its salvageable.

Someone on here posted they found a Ford Ranger filler worked for them but I don't remember what tank they used. Maybe they will chime in. IIRC YJ tanks are wider. Remember, '76 and newer frames flared out in the rear. Boss put a later YJ tank in his '76 CJ-7 project and even at that had to trim a little from the frame.

I had thought the reasoning behind which side was - opposite the exhaust outlet. The YJ/TJ is driver's drop, no? So the exhaust is routed down the passenger side, and the fuel fill is opposite. Something to consider.

No exhaust issues for me. I'm running fenderwell headers on the 304.

Ok so a YJ and 76+ CJ tank is too wide. I will have to take the remnants of the stock filler to the boneyard and see what I can find to work with a stock tank.

    Thanks

Do you have the bulkhead fitting? There's also the high-bucks option - J&W probably has one for you http://www.jwjeep.com/

I'm in the same boat as you. Have the wide fuel tank mouth and a narrow filler neck. I'm still debating what to do. Let us know what you do! :lurk:

    That was mine.
I bought a reproduction tank/skidplate filler tube combo for an intermediate CJ when I converted my 70 to rear tank, but I dont remember the exact years it was supposed to be from (that was many years ago) As timgr noted, the actual filler neck is tough to find, so i used one off a Ranger. It looks nothing like stock, so if that's a concern it wouldn't be for you.

Great solution, Doug. The main issue here, I believe, is that the filler neck is the right diameter for the filler hose.

Yes, the filler neck is the hardest piece to find, of this configuration. Contrary to what I wrote above, MTS now sells the fitting that goes in the hose, which they call "Filler hose nipple #CJFHN-1". They also have the filler vent hose, which was previously also unavailable.

Thanks Doug. I will have to hit up the rangers in the boneyard and see what I can find.

Any idea what year of Ranger filler neck you used Doug? I'm assuming I have an intermediate tank as well. The neck measures 2 1/2" across. [IMG]

^I don't remember for sure, but I think the hoses on my tank are smaller. My Jeep's currently parked 20 miles away, so I cant look at it right now. But, like Tim said, as long as you can find something that will attach to the rear panel somehow, and has the right hose size, you should be good to go. Just make sure you know what it came off of, so you can buy a gas cap for it!

FYI the vent hose sold by mts will only work with the stock metal tank with the long vent nipple on the tank. It won't work with their own plastic tank! The hose is too short and the plastic tank nipple is too short, which was my experience.

The 76 filler worked perfect for my 73 stock tank. Just cut off the 2 nipples slip larger portion of neck into stock fill hose and tighten with a clamp. Fits perfect. I will try to get some pictures of mine if you want but it was really that easy. I also found the fitting to connect the small vent hose to the filler neck but I will have to do some digging to remember where I got it from.

For my CJ-6 I ordered a YJ filler because I wanted the "clicky cap," but it will have to be modified because it is designed for a driver side fill. What sort of cap does your CJ filler utilize? I really wanted to get away from the '74 cap as it leaked very badly.

I just put a glass tub on my 74CJ5 and was in the same situation. I ended up buying a used filler assembly from a YJ. When I got it I realized the filler hose was much smaller. An easy solution is to simply cut the flange off where it necks down. The outer diameter of the stock YJ filler before it necks down fits the stock hose perfectly. My filler hose was shot as well so I ended up buying a universal hose and salvaged the overflow fitting. The problem with the universal hose was it made it very difficult to make the tight bend from the back corner to the tank but I made it work.
