What is this engine? Some version of Buick V6

I am starting the thought process of refreshing the 225V6 in my CJ2A and replacing T-90 with a granny low transmission. As always this has to be on a tight budget, so hoping to use any parts already available. Yesterday I went thru some of my junk stored at father's place and came across this engine I forgot I had. Anyone know what it is?

I acquired it with a bunch of other Jeep parts, and the guy said it was a Buick V6. I admit it looks a lot like the 225 in my CJ2a. When I first saw it, I was excited that it might be the bellhousing I would need to bolt up a SM420 to my 225. Looking closer though, the bellhousing seems different. I don't think mine has those two tabs, etc.

Run the numbers but the bellhousing bolt pattern looks like a 198 Buick. The 198 used a roundish bellhousing pattern that was shared with the 215 Buick V8. He transmission looks like a 2wd side shift T-90, possibly from a Studebaker. Should be some numbers on the passenger side.

Yup, that's a 198. Some parts do transfer to the 225, but obviously not the bell, though.

The 198 is an orphan. Parts will be expensive and scarce. The SM420 might bolt up to it - don't know. It's a GM product, so chances are good.

If your 225 has the GM bell, the SM420 should bolt up to it. GM to GM. Jeep used the GM bell for the 225 through 1970, IIRC. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/sm420.htm

What Tim said about parts being scarce for the 198..some may interchange with the 225 but IIRC its not many..I always say just because you have it doesnt mean you have to use it

IMOP - the 198 is a boat anchor unless it is running in good condition. I've had a couple over the years and learned on the first they are not worth the effort or $$$ they take.

I would save those rear dump exhaust manifolds , before it becomes a boat anchor

Thanks guys!! . . must explain why I forgot I had it. . I realized then that it was not much use to me.

Do you think this would be of any value to anyone? Not that I want to make a bunch of money, but if a "Studebaker" guy would love to have it, then nice to preserve, rather than send to scrap.

My 225 bell attaches to a T-90, from what I can tell, that is not a GM pattern. : ( I must have a conversion bell of some sort.

My first hope was to use the bellhousing, but everyone confirmed that is not possible. Then I thought "maybe use engine AND bellhousing", but you shot that down. . . Thanks for alerting me not to go down that road. : )

If I can't find anyone who wants the entire assembly, then those are some of the parts I will hold on to before scrapping. Thanks.

Good point. I will keep looking.

The passenger side was bare, unless low under the leaves. I have a photo, and that side has no markings.

A 198 Buick with a three speed, I'm thinking early 60's Skylark, may or may not be a sought after combination. If you've ever seen a Buick Nailhead engine or a TH400 out of a jeepster or Commando you'd recognize that bolt pattern.
