Use the '78 axles, at least the outer axles. Disc brake outer axles are different than drum brake in the seal area for the back of the spindle.

ok folks, almost ready to install the front dana 30 in the 71. i just finished up the rear with 4:27 gears, powr-lok, wheel spacers and now the front has 4:27 gears and a powr-lok. all new brakes from a 78. i need to get different u-bolts as i gave the spring shop the wrong measurements. will have some on order here in the next week.
i seen before on here some time ago that i need to change the front yoke out of my transfer case. is there any gaskets or sealant i need to use to replace that? i got the yoke from wheelie. will i be able to swap it out with it in the jeep?

If the seal is remotely marginal or an unknown I'd replace that. Can be done in the vehicle. Put some sealer on the yoke splines after making sure they are clean and oil free. Drain oil from transfer case first.

yes drain oil save yourself headache, you end up with a puddle of oil in your driveway. I did this three days ago..
I didn't put sealer on the splines and now I got to take off some time because it leaks slightly.

I recently picked up a Ubolt set for $30 from 4wd.com for the dana 30, I can let you know how I like them tuesday?

out of curiosity what are you doing for a driveshaft?
I put in a scout driveshaft and has some slop that I will have to fix.

i got one from a '74 cj5 (driveshaft). are the ones from 4wd 1/2" dia.? if so what is the part number because i lost my 4wd vintage catalog and can't tell what dia. they sell.
as soon as i get some u-bolts out comes the 27 and in goes the 30. i can live without a front shaft for a bit as long as i don't go wheeling with it.

thanks nick. i do know the rear seal is leaking in the tc but not sure on the front. i guess i will replace both at the same time. so no gears will "drop" when i take out the yokes front or rear?

I'm not sure if they are half inch or not, I will find out Tuesday. I have orginal dana 30 ubolts right now and assumed them to just be exact replacement.
you could call them, they don't have it in there description.. or if you haven't ordered by tuesday I can tell you.
    here is part number:
