I have a 44 rear d18 t98 and a 27 front. I picked up in a deal a30 front t-18 Trans mated to a d-300t case with a Dana44 centered rear and an AMC20 rear. Motor is a 231odd fireout of my original Jeep purchase. Will be a street legal Wheeler but not a daily driver. Going to run 33 our 34 tires. Goingto have to buy gears how ever I go. What do you think for the best combo? The AMC and the center rear 44 have the one piece axle swaps done already.

Sell the 20 keep the 44, 4.10s might be good with the 6 cyl. I have mostly the sane setup in my flaty, with the exception of the motor being a 4 cyl and 4.88s. Have you thought about the over all drive train length? I have a Dana 20 t-case on mine and it comes out quite Long. I have a t18 with a novack adaptor on it, it will be even longer if you use the 300. Rear drive line length will be very short and steep.

4.56 or 4.88. I like my 5.38 but quite low for hiway driving.
The decision on which would be determined by terrain you have in your area and will be traversing. I'd suggest also 4.27 but can be hard to find and/or expensive.
Oh, and get rid of the AMC 20 like said above. The 44 rear is head and shoulders above it.

Personally - after messing with rigs for years I love the combo I have SM465/D18/OD/4.88s. I get a great crawl ratio @80:1 and can run 70 hwy if I want (usually 60 - 65).

The T18 is equal to the T98 and close to the SM465, and the T98 is more valuable to some folks with other limits.

I know alot of folks really like the D300 (we are putting one in my boy's Scout and I have helped alot of folks with them over the years). Personally, I like the OD option of the D18. With the right gear in the axle you can get back to the low crawl of lower axle ratios with a 4:1 kit or other options while still haveing some range in Hi with a D300.

I put them all in an excel sheet and compared the numbers based on rigs I had experince with to get the final setup I really wanted.

How dose the math work for this combo? High and low. T18 d300 5:38s with 34s 231 odd-fire driven it.

The 5:38s only have to buy one set of gears already have set for rear centered 44.
