I was looking at the JeepTech page for the CJ-6, and it incorrectly says that the T-18 was offered in the CJ-6. I was there, and the only way I could get a T-18 CJ-6 was to convert a 3-speed CJ-6. The parts book says that the CJ-6 got the T-18 in '78-79, but only for export in those years.

So, was this a long-standing policy? Was the F134/T-98 ever available in a CJ-6? I'd think offering the 4-speeds would be very easy - I could have built a factory-equivalent T-18 CJ-6 from the dealer parts shelves... except for a custom rear drive shaft (it was offered to me at the time).

Was the T18 never offered with the V6, like the CJ5?

Unlikely - I don't think anyone has seen one. We've discussed it before, along with the possibility of a '71 V6 T-18 Jeepster. I think the consensus was "probably not."

If someone has the '70-73 parts book, they could look for a rear driveshaft for a '71 model 84 W4ST. They are absent from the later book.

Yes, The T98-A became an option for both the CJ-5 and CJ-6 in 1956.
As you know 1956 was the first year for CJ-6 production.
I have an original 1956 T98-A in VG original condition with all of the original parts to convert.
Sorry guys its... Not for Sale !

Here is the complete list of required parts for the ECJ's.

I'll try to remember and check on that.

I have personally seen two '71 V-6 CJ-5's with factory T-18's. Original owner parts.
I have also seen two other T-18 to D-18 units loose with the Input shaft that matched the V-6 clutch and pilot bearing dimensions and were purported to be from '71 Cj's. These were complete with D-18 transfer cases and the 1" thick adapter on the front. One had a bellhousing, one did not. I regret not buying at least one if just for history posterity but money was an issue both times.
I would think CJ-6's would be available with the same option but having never seen one cannot swear to this.

My "Standard Catalog of 4x4s 1945-2000" states that the T-18 was optional for 1970 and 1971 CJ-5's (4 cyl or 6 cyl); but specifically says not available in either year for the CJ-6 with a V-6. Maybe just available with the CJ-6 with a 4 cyl?

I used all of the Universal Parts books for reference.
From all references it becomes apparent that the T98-A begins for both CJ-5 and CJ-6 in 1956.
The T98-A was installed into CJ-5 or CJ-6 having the F-134 Hurricane engines from 1956 through 1971.

Referencing the Universal Parts Catalog W1195 -R2 (March 1971) and the F-74073 -R1 (Feb 1973).
From these two references it appears that the T18 begins sometime after March 1971.
January 1971 will likely be the very earliest date for T18 installations.
[Parts lists generally lagged about two months behind the current trend and no T18 reference is found in the W1195-R2]

In 1971 the T18 was only installed into CJ-5's and also C101 with Dauntless engines.
T-18 was never installed into the 101" or pre 1972 CJ-6's.
T18 was never installed with a F-134 Hurricane.

    Begining 1972 the T18 was used behind the 232 S-6 and 304 V-8 engines.
    Post 1972 T18 installations include CJ-5, CJ-6 and C104 Commando's.

How can that be since the CJ-7 replaced the CJ-6.
    There's no such thing as a CJ-6 after 1975.
Something doesn't seem right to me

Member wuze has an export CJ-6 in Austria, and it's ca 1980-ish. They continued to be made after 1975, but only for export. The export CJ-6s have all the attributes of a CJ-5, with the lengthened body.

    Ah Ha ! An Export.

Well obviously the NR T18 was used beginning in 1972 for the CJ-6.
So is this 78-79 date a reference for installation of the WR T18 in a CJ-6 ?

Yes. It does not say which transmission. I assumed it was the WR T-18 because that's what was available in the other CJs in '78-79.

I was looking at the '74-80 book, and there is no other reference to a 4-speed in a CJ-6 through 1979. So it was gone by '74, which matches what I was told at the time. I'd have to look again to see if there is a reference to a model 84 in 1980 - maybe the export model continued to get the CJ-5's options.

If you have a part number for the 78 -79 T18 that could likely be used to identify either the WR or NR version.
Seems that the 1979 and later would have the late T18 shift tower pattern.

I find it interesting that the CJ-6 was still built for export after 1975.
In my mind the CJ-6 was Jeeps top contender for true remote expedition service.
    (Sahara, Gobi desert etc.)
In my mind 100" wheelbase is near optimum for expedition use.
Small enough to push it by hand or to get it through the narrow tracks yet with enough cargo space to make it practical.

I would assume that since the post '75 cj6's had the '76 and up windshield hinges and, from my understanding, the wider frame, I would assume they got the WR T18 as well.

Here's an interesting point that I ran into, when researching the 4-speed transplant. The T-18's in the earlier jeeps were often confused with T-98's, because they used the top cap with the shifter forks from a T-98, but the guts and bottom casing was a T-18. The one I used is an example of this, and it still had the original tag from the factory...maybe there is a part number? See pics below:

The Jeep PN is 994753. This is a Kaiser era PN. S9 is not meaningful to us, and T18C is the transmission type. I don't know what the C means.

T98 on the shift top of a T18 is a well-known artifact of its heritage.

...which is the factory tag of a factory V6 T18.
An interesting note in the parts manual refers to the "05" model designator as this trans being used in CJ5s and DJ6s.
An example of this would be 8305 or 8605.

Also the # 994753 is the earliest number used by Jeep for any of the several various T18's they used.
That implies the 8305 (open body CJ-5) was the very first Jeep to get a Borg Warner T18.

    curtcanada,
Can you verify the build date from the CJ-5 that had this transmission ?
